Chapter 5 - THE BOARDING TICKET

I stared at the heavy cardstock in my hand, the bold letters swimming in my tear-filled vision.

Vanessa Price. Flight 402. O’Hare to Zurich.

“I don’t understand,” I breathed, looking up at Thomas. The massive security chief stood quietly among the wreckage of my life. “Why does my husband have Vanessa Price’s plane ticket in his coat? Why did he stage a break-in?”

“Because,” a voice said from the doorway, “he finally found the proof.”

I spun around. Elias Calder was standing in the ruined doorway, leaning heavily on a silver-tipped cane. The frayed brown coat was gone, replaced by a sharp, midnight-blue cashmere overcoat. The billionaire didn't look like a weary old man eating soup anymore. He looked like a king preparing for war.

“Mr. Calder,” Thomas acknowledged, stepping back to give the man space.

Elias stepped carefully over the shattered wood and looked at the ticket in my hand.

“Charles Price didn’t steal the twelve million dollars, Lily,” Elias said softly, delivering a reversal that made the floor feel like it was dropping out from under me.

“You said he did,” I argued, my voice rising in panic. “In the restaurant, you said Charles ruined Mason!”

“I said Charles was the one who destroyed Mason's career,” Elias corrected gently. “And he did. Because Charles was protecting the real thief. A father will do terrible things to keep his daughter out of federal prison.”

My eyes darted to the name on the ticket. Vanessa Price.

The woman who had tried to ruin me over a bowl of soup. The woman who treated everyone like dirt. She wasn't just an entitled brat living off her father's wealth. She was the one siphoning it.

“Vanessa was the head of regional acquisitions,” Elias explained, walking toward the window and looking out at the dark Chicago street. “She created ghost companies, billed Calder Hospitality for fake renovations, and funneled the money offshore to Switzerland. When Mason found the discrepancies two years ago, he took it to Charles. Charles panicked. Instead of turning his daughter in, he buried the files and threatened Mason.”

“But Mason didn’t stop looking,” I realized, my chest tightening. “That’s why he’s been working as a mechanic. He was hiding, but he was still digging.”

“Exactly,” Elias said, turning back to me. “And today, he finally hacked into her secure accounts. He found her exit strategy. This ticket.”

“If he found the proof, why did he run?” I cried. “Why did he take Mia and break our own door?!”

“Because Vanessa realized he was inside her system,” Thomas interjected, his deep voice grim. “When a rat is cornered, they bite. Vanessa dispatched her personal security to this apartment three hours ago. Mason saw them coming on your building’s security feed. He staged the break-in to buy time, making them think someone else had already taken him, while he and Mia escaped down the fire escape.”

I let out a ragged breath, pressing my hand to my mouth. Mason was alive. He was protecting our daughter. He had sacrificed everything to keep us safe.

My phone vibrated violently in my pocket.

I ripped it out. It was a text message from an unknown number.

My heart stopped as I looked at the screen.

It was a photograph.

It showed Mia, sitting in the back of a luxury SUV, clutching her teddy bear. Her eyes were wide with terror. Sitting next to her was a man with a jagged red scar across his face. The man from her drawing.

A second message popped up.

We found them at the train station. Bring the ticket and the silver watch to the old Navy Pier warehouse in twenty minutes. Come alone, or the mechanic and the kid take a swim.

Attached was one final picture.

It was a close-up of Vanessa Price’s hand, resting on the SUV’s center console. Draped across her manicured fingers was a breathtakingly beautiful, antique diamond necklace.

Elias looked over my shoulder at the screen.

For the first time tonight, the billionaire looked genuinely terrified.

“That necklace,” Elias whispered, his voice cracking. “That belongs to my late wife. It was in the company vault.”
