Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING

The gunshot echoed like a cannon blast over the roaring fire pit.

Carlo Moretti dropped his weapon, clutching his shoulder as blood instantly stained his heavy winter coat. He fell to his knees in the snow, howling in pain.

I looked back. Vincent stood twenty feet away, his pistol raised, smoke drifting from the barrel. He hadn't hesitated. He had protected me.

Chaos erupted in the driveway. The FBI tactical teams swarmed the gates, rappelling from the helicopters and flooding out of armored vehicles. Carlo’s men, seeing their boss bleeding in the snow and completely outgunned, threw their weapons to the ground and surrendered.

I didn't care about the Feds. I dropped the ledger on the cold cobblestones and sprinted toward Mrs. Gable.

I fell to my knees beside her, wrapping my coat around her trembling shoulders. "Mrs. Gable? Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"

The elderly woman was weeping, but she reached out and cupped my face. "I'm okay, Emily. I'm okay. Goodness gracious, what a mess."

Vincent holstered his weapon and ran over to us. He knelt in the snow, helping Mrs. Gable to her feet and handing her over to a pair of EMTs who had rushed onto the property.

As they led her away to safety, Vincent turned to me.

His eyes were wild, a mixture of profound relief and furious anger. "Are you insane?" he yelled over the sound of the helicopters. "You could have been killed! Why didn't you stay inside?"

"Because I am done letting people take bullets for me!" I yelled back, the adrenaline making my whole body shake. "I am not a damsel in distress, Vincent. I am Thomas Carter's daughter."

Vincent stared at me. The anger in his eyes slowly melted away, replaced by an overwhelming, completely disarming awe. He reached out, his large hands gripping my shoulders, pulling me firmly against his chest.

"You are incredible," he whispered fiercely into my ear.

I closed my eyes, wrapping my arms tightly around his waist, finally letting the tears fall. For the first time in three years, the crushing weight of the world felt entirely lifted from my shoulders.

"Mr. DeLuca!" a stern voice called out.

We pulled apart. A senior FBI agent in a tactical windbreaker was walking toward us, flanked by two armed agents. He looked down at the black ledger lying near the fire pit, then back at Vincent.

"Agent Miller," Vincent said, his voice returning to its calm, authoritative baseline.

"Carlo Moretti is in custody, along with his entire crew," Miller said, gesturing to the men being loaded into transport vans. "We have him for kidnapping, extortion, and attempted murder. But if we want to dismantle his organization completely, we need the book."

I stepped forward, picked the ledger up from the snow, and handed it to the agent. "It's all there. The offshore accounts, the bribes, everything. My father compiled it."

Miller took the book, his expression softening slightly. "Thomas Carter was a hero, Ms. Carter. We will ensure his name is fully cleared, and his pension is restored to your family."

"What about him?" I asked, pointing a trembling finger at Vincent.

Miller looked at Vincent. "Mr. DeLuca’s businesses have been strictly legitimate for five years. And considering he just handed us the biggest organized crime bust of the decade... the Bureau considers our business concluded."

Vincent nodded once.

As the agents turned away to secure the scene, I looked up at the massive stone mansion. The front doors were open.

Eleanor was standing on the porch, holding Mia's hand. Leo was standing beside them, clutching Mia's stuffed rabbit.

They were safe. We had won.

The wolves were finally gone.

Vincent stood beside me, watching his family. He reached down and gently took my hand. His fingers intertwined with mine, warm and solid against the freezing winter air.

"So," Vincent said softly, a small, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. "About that tutoring job."
