Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MY MOTHER

The walls of my office felt like they were shrinking.

I stared at the birth certificate, the forged signature burning into my vision.

“Forged?” I choked out. “Why would someone forge your father’s name on my birth certificate?”

“To create leverage,” Luca said, his voice hard. “Carlo Bellini kept this in his private vault. He intended to use it to challenge my claim to the syndicate if he ever needed to. By presenting you as my father’s illegitimate eldest child.”

I felt physically sick. “My mother… did she know?”

“No,” Luca said immediately, squeezing my hand. “I had Daniel track down the doctor who signed this document twenty-five years ago. He confessed. Carlo Bellini paid him to alter the hospital records the day you were born.”

“But why my mother?” I asked, tears blurring my vision. “She was nobody. She cleaned buildings.”

“She cleaned Carlo Bellini’s building,” Luca corrected softly. “And according to the doctor, Carlo took an obsessive interest in her. When she refused his advances and married your father, Carlo retaliated. He quietly ruined your father financially. And when your mother got sick… Carlo ensured she didn't get the medical care she needed.”

A sob tore from my throat. My mother’s death hadn't been a tragedy of poverty. It had been a murder by neglect, orchestrated by a monster.

Luca stood up, pulling me out of my chair and wrapping his arms tightly around me. I buried my face in his chest, sobbing uncontrollably as the grief of fifteen years crashed down on me all over again.

“I’m so sorry, Emily,” Luca whispered against my hair. “I promise you, Carlo will rot in a federal cell for the rest of his miserable life.”

I clung to him, grounding myself in his strength.

“Vanessa knew,” I realized, pulling back slightly. “That’s why she hated me so much. She knew who I was supposed to be.”

“She suspected,” Luca nodded. “She knew her father had a weapon hidden away. When you started working here, she was terrified you would uncover the lie and stake a claim on the estate.”

“I don't want the estate,” I cried. “I just wanted my mother.”

“I know,” Luca said softly, wiping a tear from my cheek.

He reached over to the desk and picked up the gold locket. He popped the clasp open.

Inside was a tiny, beautiful picture of my mother, smiling brightly.

“She was beautiful,” Luca said. “And she raised a daughter who is braver than any man I’ve ever met in my world.”

He gently fastened the gold necklace around my neck. The cool metal rested against my collarbone, right next to my heart.

“You belong here, Emily,” Luca said, his voice filled with absolute certainty. “Not because of a forged piece of paper. But because this family needs you. Because I need you.”

I looked up into his dark eyes, seeing the depth of his devotion.

“I’m not going anywhere, Luca,” I promised.
