Chapter 12 - NO LONGER STANDING IN THE SHADOWS

The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was glowing with the light of a thousand candles.
It was the night of the annual charity gala for the St. Jude Foundation. The room was packed with Chicago’s elite, philanthropists, and politicians.
A year ago, I had stood in the corner of this exact room in a stiff white uniform, holding a tray of champagne glasses, entirely invisible.
Tonight, I was standing at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a stunning, floor-length emerald green gown.
The heavy silver bracelet rested on my wrist. The gold locket sat perfectly against my chest.
I took a deep breath, smoothing my hands over the silk fabric.
“Nervous?” a voice asked softly.
I turned. Luca stepped out of the shadows of the hallway. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, looking more handsome than I had ever seen him.
“A little,” I admitted, smiling softly. “I’m not used to having everyone look at me.”
Luca stepped closer, his eyes raking over my dress, leaving a trail of heat wherever his gaze landed.
“They’re going to look at you because you are the most radiant woman in this city,” Luca said softly.
He offered me his arm.
I looped my arm through his, feeling the solid, reassuring muscle beneath his jacket.
Together, we walked down the grand staircase.
As we descended, the conversations in the ballroom naturally quieted down. Every eye turned toward us.
I saw Teresa sitting at a VIP table near the front, clapping her hands gently, her eyes shining with pride. Leo was sitting next to her, wearing a tiny tuxedo, waving excitedly at me.
We reached the bottom of the stairs.
Luca didn't lead me to the edge of the room. He didn't ask me to stand behind him.
He led me directly to the center of the ballroom, under the massive crystal chandelier.
He turned to face me, taking both of my hands in his.
“A year ago,” Luca said, his voice carrying just loud enough for the immediate crowd to hear, “this house was a fortress built on secrets and fear. You brought light into the darkness, Emily. You brought my family back to life.”
The room was completely silent.
Luca slowly sank down onto one knee.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. My hands flew to my mouth, tears instantly springing to my eyes.
Luca pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and popped it open. Inside was a breathtaking, vintage diamond ring—his grandmother’s ring.
“Emily Parker,” Luca said, looking up at me with a love so fierce and absolute it took my breath away. “Will you do me the honor of being my wife? Not to stand behind me in the shadows, but to stand beside me, as my equal, forever?”
A tear slipped down my cheek.
I didn't think about the mafia, or the past, or the trauma we had survived. I just looked at the man who had protected me, respected me, and loved me completely.
“Yes,” I whispered.
Then, louder, so the whole room could hear: “Yes, Luca.”
He slid the ring onto my finger and stood up, pulling me into a sweeping, passionate kiss.
The ballroom erupted into deafening applause.
I pulled back, laughing through my tears, and looked at my new family. Teresa was crying openly. Leo ran over and hugged my legs.
I rested my head against Luca’s chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.
I wasn't the hired help anymore. I wasn't an outsider.

I was Emily Moretti.
And I was finally home.
