Chapter 11 - THE NECKLACE IN THE VAULT

The drive to the facility was a blur. Vincent drove, his hand tightly holding mine over the center console, while Leo sat quietly in the backseat, sensing the tension.

We sprinted through the manicured lobby of the care center and down the hall to my mother’s suite.

I pushed the door open, my heart hammering in my throat, expecting the worst.

But my mother wasn't in bed.

She was sitting in a plush armchair by the window, wearing a beautiful blue cardigan, looking perfectly fine. Sitting across from her was a man in a sharp suit, holding a leather briefcase.

“Mom?” I asked, breathless. “Are you okay? They said it was an emergency.”

“I’m fine, Emily,” my mother smiled gently. “The emergency wasn't medical. It was legal. Come sit down.”

I walked over, utterly confused, with Vincent standing protectively right behind me.

“Emily, this is Mr. Sterling. He’s an attorney representing the federal seized assets division,” my mother explained.

The lawyer nodded politely. “Ms. Miller. Now that the trial against Carmine Moretti has officially concluded, the state is releasing the non-criminal assets that were unlawfully seized from your father twenty-eight years ago.”

He opened his briefcase and pulled out a small, heavy wooden box.

“Your father had a private safety deposit box that Carmine was never able to locate. It was recovered yesterday.”

He pushed the box across the table toward me.

I looked at my mother. She nodded, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

I reached out and unlatched the brass hook.

Inside the box, resting on a bed of faded black velvet, was the massive, glittering diamond necklace I had seen in the Polaroid photograph all those months ago.

“Dad bought this for you,” I whispered, looking at my mother in awe.

“He bought it for us, Emily,” she corrected softly. “He said it was our safety net. A family heirloom to ensure you would never have to worry about money a day in your life.”

I stared at the diamonds. They were beautiful, representing a father’s fierce love and sacrifice. But as I looked at them, I realized something profound.

I didn't need a safety net anymore.

I looked back at Vincent. He was watching me, his eyes filled with a quiet, immense pride.

“It’s beautiful, Mom,” I said, closing the box gently. “But I have everything I need right here.”

I stood up and walked over to Vincent. I took his hand, lacing my fingers through his.

Vincent smiled, a deep, genuine expression that changed his entire face. He looked at the lawyer. “Thank you, Mr. Sterling. We’ll take it from here.”

As we walked out of the facility, the afternoon sun warming our faces, Vincent stopped me in the courtyard garden.

He looked down at me, his thumbs gently stroking my knuckles.

“Before we were interrupted,” Vincent said softly, “I was going to ask you a question.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small velvet box again.

May you like

My heart did a somersault.
