Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH UNVEILED

The heavy wooden doors of St. Jude’s Cathedral creaked as we pushed inside. The sanctuary was empty, lit only by hundreds of flickering votive candles.

“Box 42,” Luca breathed, carrying Leo down the side aisle toward the rectory.

We found the priest’s administrative office. Luca didn’t wait for permission; he forced the door open. Inside was a wall of small brass deposit boxes used by parishioners for secure church donations and documents.

I found number 42.

“It needs a key,” I panicked, rattling the small lock.

“Stand back,” Luca said. He took a heavy bronze paperweight from the desk and smashed it into the brass lock. Three brutal hits, and the door bent open.

He reached inside and pulled out a thick, sealed envelope.

With trembling hands, Luca tore it open.

Inside was a handwritten letter from his sister, Elena. And folded beneath it was the authentic, notarized will, bearing the official seal of the Moretti family lawyer.

Luca read the letter aloud, his voice thick with emotion.

“To my brother, Luca. If you are reading this, I am gone. Vanessa Bellini has been poisoning me. She plans to take Leo to control your inheritance. I cannot trust the police—they are paid by the Donatis. I leave full, unconditional custody of my son, Leo, to you. Protect him, Luca.”

Tears spilled down my face. We had it. The proof.

Just as he finished reading, the cathedral doors burst open.

Four Chicago Police officers rushed in, their flashlights cutting through the dim church. Behind them walked Vanessa, her broken wrist heavily wrapped, flanked by two lawyers.

“There they are!” Vanessa pointed her good hand at us. “Arrest him! He kidnapped my son!”

The officers drew their weapons. “Put your hands up, Moretti!”

Luca didn’t raise his hands. He stood tall, pulling me and Leo gently behind him. He held up the thick envelope.

“Officer,” Luca’s voice boomed through the cathedral with absolute authority. “You are aiding in a kidnapping. That woman is not the child’s mother.”

Vanessa sneered. “He’s lying. I have the legal guardianship documents right here.” Her lawyer held up the forged paper.

Luca handed the real will to the lead officer. “Read it. Signed, sealed, and notarized by Judge Henry Caldwell, three years ago. The document that woman holds is a forgery created by the Donati family.”

The officer hesitated, lowering his gun to examine the paper. He shined his flashlight on the seal. His eyes widened.

“This is Judge Caldwell’s authentic watermark,” the officer said softly.

Vanessa’s face went chalk white. “It’s a fake! He forged it!”

“Really?” Luca stepped forward. “Because there is also a confession letter in here. Detailing how you poisoned my sister. We can exhume her body tomorrow. They test for heavy metals in bone marrow now, Vanessa.”

Vanessa took a step back, the arrogance finally draining from her face. She looked at her lawyers, but they were already stepping away from her, realizing the game was lost.

“You murdered my mother,” I stepped out from behind Luca, my voice echoing off the stone walls. “You stole three years of a child’s life. You are nothing but a monster.”

Leo peered around my leg. He didn’t look terrified anymore. He looked at Vanessa, then up at Luca, and he squeezed my hand.

“Arrest her,” the lead officer ordered.

Vanessa screamed as the cuffs clicked around her good wrist. She was dragged out of the church, her dignity completely shattered, her empire of lies burned to the ground.

When the doors closed behind her, the church fell silent.

Luca turned to me. The heavy, dark weight that he had carried since the engagement dinner was gone. He dropped to one knee in front of Leo.

“You’re safe now, Leo,” Luca whispered, tears in his eyes. “I promise you. No one will ever hurt you again.”

Leo reached out and wrapped his small arms tightly around Luca’s neck. “Uncle Luca.”

Luca closed his eyes, holding the boy he thought he had lost forever. Then, he looked up at me. He reached out and took my hand, pulling me down to the floor with them.

We knelt together in the candlelight. A broken maid, a hardened mafia boss, and a little boy, finally free.
