Chapter 2 - THE CHECK ON THE MAHOGANY TABLE

Vanessa’s voice shook, but she tried to laugh.

“Luca, be reasonable. I didn’t know what was in that box. I only knew that a stranger was reaching out to people in your circle, digging into old wounds before our wedding.”

Luca didn’t blink. His dark eyes remained fixed on the blue ink of her signature.

“You didn’t tell me she reached out.”

“Because I wanted to protect you!” Vanessa reached across the table, her diamond bracelets clicking against the wood. “You spent three years grieving Grace. You could barely breathe. Now, on the night we announce our future, this woman appears with a relic from a hospital bed. I offered her money to leave you in peace.”

Margaret Dawson folded her hands over her worn handbag. Her posture remained entirely calm.

“That isn’t what you said on my porch, Ms. Bellini.”

Vanessa whipped her head around. “Be very careful what lies you tell in this house.”

“Enough,” Luca whispered.

The word was quiet, but thirty guests went dead silent. Even the servers at the edge of the dining room stopped pouring wine.

Luca looked down at Grace’s handwriting. The ink was faded, eight years old, written on heavy cream paper.

*Promise me you will choose someone who is kind when nobody important is watching.*

Luca raised his head and looked at Margaret. “Why did she give this to you, Margaret? Grace had a sister. She had cousins. Why you?”

Margaret glanced at Emma, then back at Luca.

“Because Grace didn’t want family politics to interfere. She knew her family wanted your empire connected to theirs. And she knew you, Luca. She knew your guilt would make you blind.”

Margaret paused, taking a slow breath.

“Grace gave me two items eight years ago. One was the ring and this note. The second item was not to be opened unless you were about to marry someone who failed the test.”

Vanessa stepped back, her red dress swirling. “What test? This is absurd. You’re letting a hired nurse humiliate me in front of our partners!”

“Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice dangerously even. “Sit down.”

Vanessa didn’t sit. Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

Margaret reached into her navy coat. She didn’t pull out a legal document. She pulled out a small, tarnished silver locket attached to a delicate chain, wrapped around a worn child’s drawing folded into a tight square.

Luca’s breath hitched.

“Grace’s locket,” Luca said, his voice cracking. “I searched the entire lake house for that the week she passed.”

“She took it off before the ambulance came,” Margaret said gently. “And she told me who helped her hide it.”

Vanessa stared at the locket, her skin draining of all color.

Luca noticed. He looked between the silver locket and his fiancée.

“Vanessa,” Luca said softly. “You told me Grace lost that locket at the hospital. You helped me look through her room for three days.”

Vanessa took half a step backward toward the archway. “I... I must have forgotten. It was a chaotic time, Luca.”

Margaret placed the locket into Luca’s hand.

“Open it,” Margaret said. “Grace didn't put a picture inside. She put an address.”

Luca’s thumb pressed the tiny silver clasp. It clicked open.

Inside was a scrap of newspaper print with a handwritten address in St. Charles, Illinois. And under the address, Grace had written four words in pencil:

*Find Leo before Vanessa does.*

Luca froze. He stared at the scrap of paper, then slowly looked up at Vanessa.

“Who is Leo?” Luca asked.

May you like

Vanessa turned on her heel and bolted toward the stairs.
