Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

The gunshot wasn't aimed at me.

It hit Don Bellini squarely in the shoulder.

The old man collapsed with a scream, dropping his silver cane. His men scrambled, raising their weapons blindly toward the shadows of the cranes, completely confused.

“Drop your weapons! Federal Agents!” a booming voice echoed over a megaphone.

Floodlights suddenly illuminated the entire shipyard, blinding us. Dozens of FBI tactical vehicles burst through the chain-link fences, surrounding the Bellini crew in seconds.

Luca covered my body with his own, shielding me as the heavily armed agents swarmed the courtyard, disarming Bellini’s men without a single casualty.

It was a perfectly executed raid.

I looked up at Luca, completely stunned. “How did they get here?”

Luca smiled down at me, a mixture of intense relief and absolute awe on his face. He helped me sit up on the wet concrete.

“Before I left the house, I made a phone call,” Luca explained quietly, brushing the wet hair out of my face. “I didn't bring the ledger to blackmail him, Emma. I brought it to keep him distracted while the FBI set the perimeter.”

“You handed the ledger over to the Feds?” I gasped. “But... that implicates your family, too.”

“I know,” Luca said softly. “It implicates the syndicate. It burns down the empire. Which is exactly what I wanted to do.”

A tall man in a dark suit walked over to us, flashing an FBI badge.

“Mr. Moretti,” the agent said, looking down at the groaning Don Bellini being handcuffed on the ground. “You delivered exactly what you promised. The ledger will put him away for life.”

“And our deal?” Luca asked, standing up and pulling me with him.

The agent nodded. “Full immunity for you, in exchange for the complete dissolution of the Moretti crime syndicate. Your legitimate assets remain untouched. You’re a free man, Luca.”

The agent walked away to coordinate the arrests.

I stared at Luca, the reality of what he had just done washing over me. He hadn't just saved his own life. He had dismantled an entire criminal empire to ensure Oliver would never have to grow up in the shadows.

He had chosen us.

“You gave it all up,” I whispered.

“I gained everything,” Luca corrected, stepping closer. He looked at me, his dark eyes filled with an emotion so raw and powerful it made my breath catch.

“You came back for me,” Luca said, his voice thick. “You walked into a firing squad with a broken watch to save my life.”

“I couldn't let you die,” I said, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes.

Luca didn't say another word. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulled me flush against his chest, and kissed me. It wasn't hesitant. It was desperate, fierce, and tasting of rain and absolute relief. I tangled my hands in his dark hair, kissing him back with every ounce of fear and love I had been holding onto for the last twenty-four hours.

When we finally broke apart, we were both breathless, resting our foreheads together in the pouring rain.

“Let’s go get our boy,” Luca whispered.

Six Months Later.

The sun was shining brightly over the Swiss Alps, casting a golden glow over the pristine, snow-capped peaks.

I was sitting on the wooden deck of a beautiful, rustic chalet, holding a mug of hot coffee, watching the incredible view. The air was crisp, clean, and completely silent.

The heavy glass doors slid open behind me.

Luca walked out onto the deck. He was wearing a soft gray sweater and jeans, looking more relaxed and handsome than I had ever seen him. The dark circles under his eyes were gone. The tension in his shoulders had completely vanished.

He handed me a fresh croissant from the local bakery and kissed the top of my head.

“Morning,” he murmured, leaning against the railing beside me.

“Morning,” I smiled, taking a bite of the pastry. “Is he awake?”

“He’s currently trying to teach the neighbor’s Golden Retriever how to speak Italian,” Luca laughed softly.

We looked down at the sprawling green lawn below the deck.

Oliver was running through the grass, chasing the massive, happy dog, laughing so hard he tripped over his own feet. He didn't look like a terrified secret anymore. He looked like a normal, happy nine-year-old boy.

He was safe. He was loved. He was exactly where he belonged.

My mother had moved into a lovely cottage in the nearby village, finally free from the stress of living paycheck to paycheck in Chicago. Luca had ensured she was taken care of for the rest of her life.

“Hey, Mom! Look!” Oliver yelled from the yard.

I smiled, my heart swelling every time he called me that. It had taken a few months, but one day, he just started saying it. And it felt completely natural.

He held up a piece of paper, waving it frantically.

“I finished the new drawing!” he shouted proudly.

Luca and I walked down the wooden stairs to the lawn. Oliver handed me the paper, beaming with pride.

It was a drawing done in brightly colored markers.

A big wooden house. A snowy mountain. A happy dog.

And three people holding hands.

A tall man with dark hair. A woman with a big smile. And a little boy standing safely between them.

“It’s beautiful, sweetheart,” I said, kneeling down to hug him tightly.

“I added something new,” Oliver said, pulling back and pointing to the bottom of the page.

I looked closely.

Drawn near the bottom corner, tucked safely in the man’s pocket, was a shiny silver watch.

The glass wasn't broken. It was perfectly whole.

I looked up at Luca. His eyes were shining with unshed tears. He reached out, pulling both me and Oliver into a massive, warm hug.

“It’s perfect,” Luca whispered, kissing my cheek.

The empire was gone. The violence was over.

We had finally built a new family, and this time, nothing was ever going to break us apart.
