Chapter 11 - THE MAN FROM THE PAST

"Dad?" I gasped, stepping out from behind Luca.
My father, William Collins, stood in the doorway leaning heavily on a wooden cane. He looked exhausted, his worn jacket hanging loosely on his frame, but his eyes were sharp and wide with panic.
"Megan!" he cried, pushing past the guards with surprising strength and wrapping me in a fierce, crushing hug. "Are you alright? The police came to the house this morning asking questions about a shootout at this estate. I thought you were dead!"
"I'm fine, Dad, I promise," I said, hugging him back tightly, tears springing to my eyes. "I'm perfectly safe."
My father pulled back, holding me at arm's length to inspect me. He saw the bandage on my hand, the dirt on my clothes, and the expensive pearl necklace resting against my collarbone.
His brow furrowed in confusion. He looked past me, his eyes landing on the imposing figure of Luca Moretti standing in the center of the foyer.
The color drained completely from my father's face.
"You," my father whispered, his grip on his cane tightening until his knuckles turned white.
Luca stood perfectly still, his dark eyes fixed on my father. He didn't look surprised. He looked like a man who had been waiting for this moment.
"Hello, William," Luca said quietly, his voice respectful but firm.
I looked between the two men, utterly bewildered. "You know each other?"
My father let out a shaky breath, stepping in front of me as if to shield me from Luca.
"We met a long time ago, Megan," my father said, his voice trembling slightly. "Before you were even born."
"Dad, what are you talking about?" I asked, my heart beginning to race again.
Luca took a slow step forward, keeping his hands visible and unthreatening.
"Twenty-nine years ago," Luca explained softly, his eyes never leaving my father. "Your father owned a small trucking company on the South Side. He was struggling to make ends meet. He took a loan from the wrong people."
My father closed his eyes, shame washing over his face. "The Rossi family."
I gasped. The same family that had tried to kill us last night.
"They were going to take his business," Luca continued, his voice steady. "They were going to hurt him and your mother. But my father, the head of the Moretti family at the time, stepped in. He paid off the debt and protected your family from the Rossis."
My father looked at Luca, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "I owed your father my life, Luca. He told me to disappear, to start over, and to never get involved with the syndicates again."
"And you did," Luca nodded. "You built a good, honest life, William. You raised an incredible daughter."
My father looked at me, then back at Luca. "When I lost my job because of my back, Megan took a job here to help us. I didn't know she was working for you until she was already hired. I was terrified the past would catch up to us."
Luca stepped closer, bridging the gap between them.
"The past did catch up, William," Luca said softly. "But not the way you feared."
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of heavy parchment paper. He handed it to my father.
My father took it with trembling hands and unfolded it.
"What is this?" my father asked, his voice cracking as he read the document.
"It's the deed to your house," Luca said. "Paid in full. Along with a trust fund set up in your name to cover any and all medical expenses you will ever have."
My father stared at the paper, completely overwhelmed. "Luca... I can't. The debt I owed your father—"
"Is paid," Luca interrupted firmly. "It was paid last night, when your daughter stood in front of a gunman and saved my child's life."
My father looked at me, his eyes wide with shock and awe. "You did what?"
"She protected what is mine," Luca said, his voice vibrating with absolute sincerity. "And now, I am going to protect what is yours. Your family is under my permanent protection, William. You will never have to worry about money or safety again."
My father slowly lowered the document. He looked at Luca, seeing past the intimidating reputation to the honorable man standing before him.
"Thank you," my father whispered, tears finally spilling down his weathered cheeks.
Luca nodded respectfully. "You are welcome here anytime, William."
My father pulled me into another hug, holding me tight. "I'm so proud of you, Megan," he whispered in my ear. "But are you sure you want this? His world is dangerous."
I pulled back and looked at Luca. I thought about the fear, the chaos, and the violence of the past twelve hours.
But I also thought about the way he held his daughter. The way he bandaged my hand. The way he looked at me like I was the only person in the room.
"I'm sure, Dad," I said, a soft, confident smile spreading across my face. "I'm exactly where I belong."
My father nodded, seemingly satisfied by the conviction in my voice. He thanked Luca one more time before Marco arranged for a secure car to take him back home, ensuring he arrived safely.
When the heavy front doors closed, leaving Luca and me alone in the foyer once more, the silence felt different. It wasn't tense or heavy. It felt like a blank page, ready for a new story to be written.
Luca walked over to me, stopping just inches away. He reached out and gently traced the line of the pearl necklace resting against my collarbone.
"You're sure?" he murmured, echoing my father's question, his dark eyes searching mine for any trace of doubt.
"I've never been more sure of anything," I promised him.
Luca smiled, a breathtaking, genuine smile that reached his eyes. He leaned down and kissed me, sealing the promise, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me tightly against him.

"Good," he whispered against my lips. "Because I'm never letting you go."
