Chapter 4 - THE ENEMY AT THE TABLE

Julian Rossi stood up slowly.
He was wearing a bespoke charcoal suit, his dark hair slicked back. He had been introduced to the guests as Vanessa’s distant cousin, a quiet businessman who had invested in her boutique.
Nobody in this room—except Luca and his security—knew that Julian was the youngest son of the Rossi crime family. Luca had allowed him to attend the dinner as a gesture of peace, a fragile truce between the two syndicates meant to solidify a new era of legitimate business.
Julian wasn't looking at Luca. He was looking at Vanessa with a gaze so cold it made the hair on my arms stand up.
"Vanessa," Julian said, his voice smooth and dangerous. "Are you implying that my family had something to do with Caroline's death?"
Vanessa’s eyes darted frantically between Luca and Julian. She was trapped between a grieving husband and a ruthless enforcer.
"Julian, please," Vanessa stammered. "I didn't say that."
"You said you were paying us," Julian corrected, stepping out from behind his chair. "But my father never received a dime from you. In fact, my family forgave your debt three years ago. Right around the time Caroline died."
Luca turned his head slowly toward Julian. "You forgave a two-million-dollar debt?"
"We did," Julian nodded. "Because Vanessa offered us something far more valuable than money."
"Julian, shut up!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging toward him.
Two of Luca's security guards stepped out of the shadows, grabbing Vanessa by the arms and pinning her firmly in place. She thrashed wildly, her red gown tearing at the shoulder.
Luca stared at Julian. "What did she offer you?"
Julian smiled, but there was no warmth in it. It was a predator's smile.
"Information," Julian said softly. "Vanessa came to us and told us that she could get close to you, Luca. She said she could become your wife. And once she was inside the Moretti estate, with full access to your accounts and your security protocols, she would hand it all over to us."
The guests were completely frozen, paralyzed by the realization that they were caught in the middle of a mafia confrontation.
My heart was hammering against my ribs. I instinctively moved closer to Sophia, placing my body between the little girl and Julian.
Luca didn't flinch. "You conspired with this woman to infiltrate my home."
"It was a business arrangement," Julian shrugged. "You control the shipping ports. We want them. Vanessa was our Trojan horse. And her plan was working perfectly. Until tonight."
Julian looked down at the ruined bowl of tomato soup, then at me.
"Until a housemaid and a thirteen-year-old girl ruined it over a string of cheap pearls."
Luca’s hands balled into fists. "If you conspired with her, then you know what happened to my wife."
Julian’s smile faded. He looked at Vanessa, who was sobbing hysterically in the grips of the guards.
"I know that Caroline was a problem for Vanessa," Julian said coldly. "Caroline was refusing to give her any more money. And more importantly, Caroline stood in the way of Vanessa getting to you."
Julian reached into his suit jacket.
Instantly, the two guards drew their weapons, aiming directly at Julian's chest.
Julian raised his other hand slowly in surrender. "Easy. I'm just taking something out of my pocket. A wedding gift."
Using just two fingers, Julian pulled out a small, heavy silver object and tossed it onto the dining table.
It slid across the white linen and stopped directly in front of Luca.
It was a small, antique silver pillbox.
"I found that in Vanessa's apartment three years ago," Julian said. "The night after Caroline died."
Luca stared at the pillbox. He didn't touch it.
"Caroline died of a sudden cardiac failure," Luca said, his voice hollow. "The doctors said her heart simply gave out."
"Her heart gave out," Julian agreed softly, "because someone replaced her daily heart medication with digitalis. A massive overdose."
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
Sophia let out a sharp cry and buried her face in my apron. I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her tight against me, tears streaming down my own face.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
His face had lost all color. He looked like a man who had just had his soul ripped out of his body.
"You poisoned my wife," Luca whispered.
"No!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing so hard it took three men to hold her. "I didn't do it! Julian is lying! He's trying to frame me because the truce is failing!"
"Open the pillbox, Luca," Julian said calmly.
Luca slowly reached out. His hand, usually so steady, trembled as he picked up the silver box.
He pressed the latch.
The lid popped open.
Inside the pillbox, resting on the velvet lining, was a single, tiny white pill.
But that wasn't what made Luca stop breathing.
Engraved on the inside of the silver lid were three words.
For Victoria's silence.
"My father gave her that pillbox," Julian explained, his voice echoing in the silent room. "He gave it to her as a token of our arrangement. And he provided the digitalis."
Julian took a step backward toward the dining room doors.
"You see, Luca, my family didn't want a war. We just wanted the ports. Vanessa promised us a bloodless takeover. But she got sloppy. She left the evidence lying around."
Julian looked at Vanessa with absolute disgust.
"You're a liability, Vanessa. And my family doesn't do business with liabilities."
Julian turned back to Luca.
"The truce holds, Moretti. We wash our hands of her. She is yours to deal with."
Julian turned and walked calmly out of the dining room.
Nobody tried to stop him.
The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and terrifying.
Luca stood at the head of the table, holding the silver pillbox. He looked down at the woman he had almost married.
Vanessa had stopped fighting. She hung limply in the guards' arms, her makeup ruined, her eyes wide with the realization that she had just been abandoned by the only people who could protect her.
"Luca," she whimpered, her voice barely audible. "Please. It wasn't just me."
Luca slowly raised his eyes. "What did you say?"
Vanessa swallowed hard, a sick, desperate look crossing her face.
"I didn't have access to Caroline's medication," Vanessa whispered. "I was only a guest. I couldn't have switched the pills without being seen by your security."
She looked around the room, her eyes locking onto a specific person standing near the kitchen doors.

"I didn't act alone, Luca. I had help from someone inside this house."
