Chapter 8 - THE SAFE HOUSE BY THE LAKE

The sun was just beginning to rise over Lake Michigan when the SUV finally pulled into a long, secluded driveway surrounded by towering pine trees.
At the end of the drive sat a beautiful, modern glass-and-wood cabin overlooking the water. It was a stark contrast to the dark, oppressive architecture of the Chicago mansion. This place felt open, bright, and safe.
The driver parked the car. Luca stepped out and gently lifted a still-sleeping Sophia into his arms.
I followed them inside. The cabin was warm, the heat having been turned on remotely by Marco before we arrived.
Luca carried Sophia upstairs and tucked her into a large bed in one of the guest rooms, pulling a thick down comforter over her shoulders. I stood in the doorway, watching him brush a stray curl off her forehead with a tenderness that made my chest ache.
When he walked out into the hallway, he closed the door softly.
He looked exhausted. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind the heavy toll of the night's betrayals.
"There's a room for you down the hall," Luca said quietly. "You should get some sleep."
"I'm not tired," I lied, my heart racing simply from standing alone with him in the quiet cabin.
Luca studied my face. He stepped closer, the physical distance between us shrinking until I could smell the faint scent of smoke and expensive cologne clinging to his ruined suit.
"You're shaking," he murmured.
"It's just the cold," I said quickly.
He didn't believe me. He reached out and gently ran the back of his knuckles down my cheek. The contact sent a jolt of electricity straight to my toes.
"You've been incredibly brave tonight, Megan," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating in the quiet hallway. "You saved my life. You saved my daughter. But you don't have to be strong anymore. Not with me."
My walls finally crumbled. The tears I had been fighting back for hours spilled over my lashes.
Luca didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, wrapping me in a tight, protective embrace. I buried my face in his chest, clutching the lapels of his suit jacket as I sobbed quietly.
He held me, resting his chin on the top of my head, rubbing his hand soothingly up and down my back.
"I've got you," he whispered against my hair. "You're safe."
We stood there for a long time. For the first time in years, I wasn't worrying about my parents' bills or dealing with Vanessa's cruelty. I was simply allowing myself to be held by a man who made me feel completely secure.
When I finally pulled back, wiping my eyes in embarrassment, Luca didn't let me go far. His hands rested on my waist.
"I'm sorry," I sniffled, trying to laugh. "I didn't mean to fall apart on your suit. It's already ruined anyway."
A small, genuine smile broke across Luca's face. It transformed him, erasing the hardened mafia boss and revealing the handsome, deeply caring man underneath.
"The suit is replaceable," Luca said softly. "You are not."
He leaned in, his gaze dropping to my lips. My breath hitched. I closed my eyes, anticipating the kiss.
But before his lips could touch mine, a sharp ringing sound shattered the quiet moment.
It was the secure landline sitting on a small table at the end of the hall.
Luca closed his eyes, exhaling a frustrated breath. He rested his forehead against mine for a second.
"Duty calls," he whispered regretfully.
He stepped away and picked up the phone.
"Yes," Luca answered, his voice instantly returning to business.
I watched him listen. His expression darkened.
"Are you sure?" Luca asked sharply. "How is that possible?"
He was silent for another moment.
"Keep a team on her. If she makes a move toward the city, lock her down."
He hung up the phone and turned to me. The warmth in his eyes had vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating intensity.
"What is it?" I asked, a knot forming in my stomach.
"Vanessa," Luca said grimly.
"I thought she was dead. Marco said they shot her in the holding room."
"They did," Luca replied. "But the bullet missed her heart. She survived the chaos at the estate and managed to escape while the police were securing the perimeter."
My blood ran cold. "Where is she?"
"She checked into a small clinic under an assumed name two towns over," Luca said. "Marco's men tracked her there. She's injured, but she's alive. And she's not alone."
I frowned. "What do you mean she's not alone?"
Luca walked back toward me, his jaw clenched tight.
"She made a phone call from the clinic," Luca said. "To a lawyer. She's demanding a meeting with me."
"Why would she demand a meeting?" I asked, terrified. "She has nothing left. You know the truth."
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the pearl necklace, still wrapped in the white handkerchief.
"Because she didn't just escape with her life," Luca said softly, his eyes locking onto mine. "She took something from the estate before she left. Something that belongs to Caroline."
He unwrapped the handkerchief.
The silver clasp of the pearl necklace was hanging open.
"She took the photograph," Luca whispered.
I stared at the empty clasp. The tiny, folded picture of Caroline, Luca, and baby Sophia that had been hidden inside was gone.
"Why would she take a photograph?" I asked, utterly confused.
"Because it wasn't just a photograph," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Caroline wrote a message on the back of it. A message that proves Vanessa was the one who poisoned her."
My eyes widened. "Caroline knew?"
"Caroline knew," Luca confirmed. "And Vanessa knows that if I get that photograph, I won't just hand her over to the police. I'll hand her over to the Commission for breaking the truce."
Luca put the necklace back in his pocket.
"I have to go meet her," Luca said.
"No!" I blurted out, grabbing his arm. "It's a trap, Luca. She's desperate. Desperate people do terrible things."
Luca looked down at my hand gripping his sleeve, then back up at my face.
"I have to get that photograph back, Megan," he said softly. "It's the last piece of my wife I have. And I refuse to let that monster use it as leverage."
"Then I'm coming with you," I said firmly.
Luca shook his head. "Absolutely not. You are staying here with Sophia. It's too dangerous."
"She knows I found the clasp!" I argued. "She knows I'm the one who revealed the initials. If you go alone, she'll use me against you anyway. Let me help you."
Luca stared at me, the conflict evident in his dark eyes. He hated the idea of putting me in danger, but he recognized the fierce determination in my voice.
"Fine," Luca finally agreed, his voice hard. "But you stay in the car. You don't get out unless I tell you to. Understood?"
"Understood."
We quietly left the cabin, ensuring the security system was fully engaged to protect a sleeping Sophia.
The drive to the clinic was tense and silent. The sun was fully up now, casting long, stark shadows across the empty roads.
We pulled into the parking lot of a small, nondescript medical facility on the outskirts of town.
Marco was waiting by the entrance, leaning against a black sedan. He nodded to Luca as we approached.
"She's in room 12," Marco said quietly. "Doctor says the bullet grazed her ribs. Painful, but superficial. She's awake and demanding to see you."
Luca turned to me. "Stay in the car."
I nodded, watching as he and Marco walked into the clinic.
I sat in the passenger seat, my heart pounding in my chest. The silence was deafening.
Ten minutes passed. Then fifteen.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the back of the clinic building.
I jumped, my eyes darting toward the sound.
A figure stumbled out of the side exit door, clutching a bloody bandage to their side.
It was Vanessa.
She wasn't waiting for Luca in the room. She had set a distraction and slipped out the back.
She saw the black SUV idling in the parking lot. She saw me sitting inside.
A twisted, furious smile spread across her face.
She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, pearl-handled revolver.

She raised the gun, aiming directly at the windshield. At me.
