Chapter 12 - A NEW RING FOR GRACE

He opened a small velvet box.

Inside wasn't a blood diamond or a gaudy mafia showpiece. It was a simple, elegant emerald—the exact shade of the green booths in my mother’s diner.

“Luca…” I whispered, covering my mouth.

“Marry me,” he said, taking my hand. His thumbs traced the calluses on my fingers, the rough skin I had earned from years of scrubbing pots and polishing silver. He didn't ignore my past; he kissed my knuckles, revering it. “Be my wife. Be Leo’s mother. Be my partner in everything.”

All my insecurities, all the fear of not belonging, vanished in the warmth of his grip.

“Yes,” I breathed.

He slipped the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

Six months later, the estate gardens were covered in white roses.

I didn't wear a designer gown picked out by a stylist. I wore a dress I bought with the profits from my first month managing the diner’s new commercial lease.

As I stood at the altar under the sun, looking at Luca, I felt a tug on my skirt.

Leo was standing there, holding the velvet pillow with our wedding bands. Around his neck, on a leather cord, was his grandfather’s silver watch.

I smiled, taking Luca’s hands in mine.

I wasn't a frightened maid anymore. I wasn't hiding from debt, and I wasn't running from the past. I was a mother, a businesswoman, and the wife of a man who looked at me like I hung the moon.

Luca leaned in, his lips brushing my ear as the priest spoke.

“To forever,” he whispered.

“To forever,” I promised.

And as the crowd cheered, I knew, for the first time in my life, I was finally home.
