Chapter 11 - THE HEIR TO THE EMPIRE

Luca read the letter, his eyes darting across my mother’s handwriting.

His face went completely pale.

“Emma…” Luca breathed.

My father, Matteo, looked terrified. “What does it say?”

I couldn’t speak. The words were still ringing in my head, tearing down the final wall of lies my mother had built to keep me alive.

Luca read the letter aloud, his voice echoing in the quiet loft.

‘My dearest Emma. By now, you know Matteo Santoro is your father. He is a good man, and he loves you deeply. But I am not your biological mother.’

My father grabbed the edge of the wooden pew to steady himself.

‘Your mother was Isabella Bellini,’ Luca read, his voice shaking. ‘Carlo’s younger sister.’

The silence in the cathedral was absolute.

I was a Bellini.

‘Isabella hated Carlo’s violence,’ the letter continued. ‘She fell in love with Matteo, a humble piano tuner. When she got pregnant, Carlo was furious. He ordered Isabella to terminate the pregnancy. Instead, Isabella fled. She gave birth to you in secret, but she bled too much. Before she died, she begged me—her loyal maid—to take you and run. She begged me to give you to Matteo when it was safe.’

I touched my face, the tears falling freely now.

I wasn’t a maid’s daughter.

I was the blood niece of Carlo Bellini. The true, legitimate heir to the Bellini empire.

‘Vanessa was a distraction,’ my mother’s letter concluded. ‘Carlo adopted Vanessa to play the part of his heir. But he never stopped looking for you, Emma. Because under Italian syndicate law, the empire belongs to Isabella’s bloodline. It belongs to you.’

Luca slowly lowered the paper.

He looked at me, no longer seeing a housekeeper, or even just the woman he loved. He was looking at the rightful queen of the rival family.

“You own it,” Luca whispered. “The Bellini shipping lines, the accounts, the properties. It all legally belongs to you.”

My father wept openly. “Isabella made me promise to stay away. She said if Carlo knew I was your father, he would kill us both. Sarah sacrificed her entire life to raise you in my place.”

I walked over and threw my arms around my father.

“She was my mother,” I cried fiercely into his shoulder. “Blood doesn’t matter. Sarah raised me. She loved me. She is my mother.”

Matteo hugged me back, his scarred face buried in my hair.

Luca stood quietly, giving us the moment.

When I finally pulled away, I looked at the man I loved.

“What do I do with it, Luca?” I asked, feeling the terrifying weight of an empire suddenly resting on my shoulders. “I don’t want it. I don’t want the Bellini name. I don’t want the blood money.”

Luca walked over and took my hands in his.

His dark eyes were fierce, proud, and completely full of love.

“You do exactly what my father was trying to do before he died,” Luca said. “You burn it down.”

A smile broke through my tears.

“We burn it down together,” I said.

Three days later, we did exactly that.

With Beatrice’s legal expertise and the absolute proof of my lineage, we walked into the federal prosecutor’s office.

I signed away every single Bellini asset to the federal government. The offshore accounts, the properties, the corrupt contracts—all of it dismantled and dissolved in an afternoon.

Carlo Bellini, sitting in a federal holding cell, received the news that his empire hadn’t just been seized; it had been legally dismantled by the niece he had tried to murder.

He suffered a massive, non-fatal stroke the next morning. He would spend the rest of his miserable life trapped in his own body in a prison hospital.

Vanessa’s plea deal was revoked. She was sentenced to twenty years.

The shadows that had haunted the Moretti and Santoro families for seventeen years were finally, completely gone.

It was over.

We drove back to the Moretti estate as the sun began to set over Lake Michigan.

The house felt different now. The heavy, oppressive weight was gone. The curtains were open. The staff was smiling.

Leo was running across the front lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy Luca had bought him that morning.

I stood on the front steps, breathing in the crisp, clean air.

Luca came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“You destroyed an empire today, Emma Sullivan,” Luca murmured, kissing my neck.

“I prefer building things anyway,” I smiled, leaning back into his solid chest.

“Good,” Luca said softly. “Because there is one last thing we need to do in this house.”

He took my hand and led me inside.

He didn’t take me to the dining room, or his study.

He took me to the west wing.
