The Woman in Room Twelve / Chapter 10 / 11

Chapter 11 - The Word on the Charm

“Always,” I read aloud, my voice barely above a whisper.

Luca looked at the engraving. “What does it mean?”

I looked up at Dr. Mercer, the pieces of a forgotten memory suddenly locking into place.

“When I was a little girl,” I said, my voice shaking, “my father used to tell me a bedtime story. About a brave knight who hid a princess in a tower to keep her safe from a dragon.”

Sofia had walked into the living room, drawn by the quiet intensity of the conversation. She stood silently by the doorway, listening.

“At the end of the story,” I continued, a tear slipping down my cheek, “the knight would promise to protect the princess. And the princess would ask, ‘For how long?’ And the knight would always say...”

“Always,” Sofia finished softly.

I turned to look at her.

Sofia’s eyes were wide, filled with an overwhelming emotion.

“My father told me the exact same story,” Sofia whispered. “When I was little. The man who raised me... the man I thought was my uncle... he told me that story every night.”

Dr. Mercer smiled, a sad but beautiful expression.

“Because it wasn't just a story,” the old doctor said. “Thomas Sullivan didn't just hide Sofia, Emma. He raised her for the first five years of her life, before he had to move her again to keep the Commission off her trail.”

My mind reeled.

I looked at Sofia. The woman who looked exactly like the man I loved. The woman who was Luca's twin.

“We lived in the same house,” I breathed.

Sofia walked forward and took my hands in hers.

“You were the baby in the crib next to mine,” Sofia said, crying freely now. “I remember. I remember you.”

The profound weight of the revelation settled over the room like a warm blanket.

Our fathers hadn't just arranged a marriage. They had bound our families together in blood, loyalty, and love, decades before we ever knew the truth.

Luca stood up, pulling me and Sofia into his arms, wrapping his strength around both of us.

It was the closure we didn't know we still needed. The final ghost laid to rest.

That evening, after Dr. Mercer had left and Leo was tucked into bed, Luca and I walked out onto the patio.

The sky was clear, bursting with a million stars reflecting off the quiet surface of the lake.

I was wearing the silver bracelet. The charms jingled softly as I leaned against the wooden railing.

Luca wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“Are you okay?” he murmured, his breath warm against my neck.

“I am,” I said, leaning back into his solid chest. “It just feels... complete. Like everything that happened, all the pain, all the fear, it was all leading us exactly here.”

Luca turned me around so I was facing him.

The moonlight caught the hard, handsome angles of his face, a face that no longer held the dark burden of the mafia. He was just Luca now. A brother. An uncle.

And soon, a husband.

“I spent my entire life trying to protect an empire I hated,” Luca said, his hands resting on my hips. “But this... this is the only thing I ever really wanted to protect.”

He leaned down and kissed me.

It was slow, deep, and filled with a promise that needed no words.

When he pulled away, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small piece of paper.

“I got a call today,” he said, a playful glint in his eye.

“From who?” I asked, suddenly nervous.

“From a priest in the local parish,” Luca smiled. “He said he has an opening for a wedding ceremony. Next Saturday.”

I laughed, a bright, bubbling sound that echoed across the lawn. “Next Saturday? Luca, we haven't planned anything!”

“I don't need a plan,” he said, pulling me closer. “I just need you. Sofia already volunteered to handle the flowers. And Leo insists on being the ring bearer, though he wants to wear a superhero cape instead of a tuxedo.”

I smiled so hard my cheeks hurt.

“A superhero cape sounds perfect.”

“So, is that a yes?” he asked, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.

“Always,” I whispered, touching the silver sun charm on my wrist. “Always.”
