Chapter 2 - A SILVER PIN AND A SHATTERED TRUST

The silence in the small storage closet felt heavy enough to crush the air from Luca’s lungs.
He remained completely still, staring at the older woman sitting in the chair.
“A household uniform,” Luca repeated, his voice dangerously soft. “Are you certain, Ruth?”
“Yes.” Ruth pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, her hands still shaking. “It was charcoal gray with white piping along the collar. The exact same uniform the young woman who tried to help me earlier was wearing.”
Luca’s mind raced. Eight years ago, his estate had employed over twenty women.
“Did you see her face?” he asked.
“Only for a moment,” Ruth said. “She stayed near the door of the shop while Vanessa approached the counter. But I remember one specific detail. She wore a small, silver pin on her left lapel. It was shaped like a swallow.”
Luca felt the blood drain from his face.
The silver swallow.
It was a custom pin. He knew exactly who wore it, because his mother had given it to the head housekeeper, Maria, thirty years ago. Maria had practically raised Luca. She had managed the estate, cared for Anna during her pregnancy, and mourned with him when Anna died.
And she had abruptly retired with a generous pension exactly one week after Anna’s funeral.
“Mr. Moretti?” Ruth asked quietly. “Do you know who she is?”
“I do.” Luca closed the velvet box, hiding his wife’s ring from view. “Ruth, I need you to stay in this room for just a little longer. I am going to have my head of security bring you through the back stairwell to my private study. It’s the safest place for you right now.”
Ruth nodded, tears of relief shining in her eyes. “Thank you.”
Luca stepped out of the gift room and locked the heavy oak doors of the corridor behind him. His heart hammered against his ribs, a cold, violent anger replacing his initial shock. Maria had betrayed him. Vanessa had been involved with Anna’s ring two years before they had officially "met."
Nothing in his life was what it seemed.
He walked down the grand staircase, his face a mask of polite indifference. The dining room was still filled with laughter and the clinking of crystal.
Vanessa was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, a perfectly manicured hand resting on the banister.
“Darling,” she purred, her eyes scanning his face. “You were gone a long time. Is everything alright?”
“Fine,” Luca said smoothly. “Just a minor issue with the security system on the east wing.”
Vanessa smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. “I was actually just looking for your clumsy little maid. Grace. She left her apron in the kitchen, and you’ll never believe what fell out of her pocket.”
She opened her palm.
Resting on her diamond-studded fingers was Luca’s vintage gold pocket watch—the one his grandfather had given him.

“I suppose her injured wrist didn't stop her from stealing,” Vanessa said softly. “I’ll have security escort her out immediately.”
