Chapter 8 - THE SECRETS OF THE DEAD

Luca stared at the leather book in Grace’s hands as if it were a bomb about to detonate.

He slowly reached out and took it. The leather was worn, the pages soft with age. He opened it to the first marked page. It was Anna’s handwriting—elegant, looping, and rushed.

As Luca read in silence, the color steadily drained from his face.

Grace watched him, her heart aching for a man she had only ever known as a stoic, untouchable employer. Right now, he looked entirely broken.

“Read it aloud, Luca,” Arthur said gently. “You need to hear it.”

Luca swallowed hard. His voice cracked as he read his late wife's words.

“October 12th. I found the offshore accounts today. Vanessa hasn't just been embezzling from the children's charity; she’s been using the foundation to launder money for the Chicago syndicate. If Luca finds out she’s using the Moretti name to traffic illegal weapons, the syndicate will kill him to cover their tracks. I can't tell him. I have to leave. I have to take the evidence to the police in New York. If I stay, Vanessa will ensure Luca takes the fall.”

Luca stopped reading. He closed the book, his knuckles white.

Anna hadn't been running away from him. She had been running away for him. She had sacrificed her life to protect him from a criminal conspiracy Vanessa was running right under his nose.

“Vanessa knew Anna had the ledger,” Arthur explained, his raspy voice filling the quiet room. “She had Maria tamper with the brakes on Anna’s car. When Anna crashed, Vanessa’s people scoured the wreckage. They took the rosary, the ring, the luggage. But they never found the ledger.”

“Where is it?” Luca asked, his voice deadly quiet.

“She mailed it to me,” Arthur said. “The day she died. That’s why Vanessa had me followed. That’s why she forced Grace to work for her—she thought Grace would eventually lead her to the ledger. But I never told Grace anything to protect her.”

Grace looked at her father, tears welling in her eyes. “Dad… you’ve been living in fear for eight years to protect Mr. Moretti?”

“I was protecting the truth, Gracie,” Arthur smiled sadly.

Suddenly, the front door of the small house burst open, shattering the quiet moment.

Two large men in dark suits stepped into the room, followed immediately by Vanessa Bellini.

She was no longer wearing her red gown. She wore a sharp black trench coat, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at Arthur Miller’s chest.

“What a touching family reunion,” Vanessa sneered. Her eyes flicked to Luca, then to the diary in his hand. “I knew you were too smart to stay blind forever, Luca. Give me the book.”

Luca stepped in front of Grace and Arthur, shielding them. “It’s over, Vanessa. The police already have the ledger.”

Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Please. Miller is a disgraced, crippled ex-cop. No one will believe him. Hand over the diary, Luca, and I might let the maid live.”

“You’re right,” a new voice said from the doorway.

Vanessa spun around.

Standing on the porch, flanked by six armed Moretti security guards, was Captain Miller—Arthur’s former partner at the precinct.

“They won't believe him,” the Captain said, raising his badge. “But they’ll believe me.”

Vanessa’s face went chalk white. She slowly lowered her gun, realizing she was completely surrounded.
