Chapter 2 - THE SILVER WATCH

The guest suite was suffocating in its luxury.

Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wrapping her arms around herself. The emerald silk dress felt less like a gift and more like a brand.

Adrien Russo knew where Tommy was.

For six months, she had imagined the worst. Late-night phone calls from the police. Unmarked graves. Now, she knew her brother was alive, but his life was being used as leverage by a man who owned half the city.

She turned away from the window, unable to look at the glittering skyline anymore.

She needed to think. She needed an advantage, any piece of information she could use.

Elena moved silently through the massive suite, opening drawers and checking closets. Nothing. The room was entirely impersonal, designed for transient guests.

But as she approached the heavy oak nightstand, she noticed the drawer was slightly ajar.

She pulled it open.

Inside sat a heavy, silver pocket watch. It looked incredibly out of place among the modern, minimalist decor. The silver was tarnished in places, and the chain looked old.

She picked it up. It felt strangely heavy in her palm.

She pressed the clasp. The cover popped open.

The hands were frozen at exactly 11:42.

But it wasn’t the time that made Elena’s heart skip a beat. It was the photograph tucked inside the casing.

It was a picture of her parents.

Her mother and father, smiling in front of their old sedan, years before the accident.

Her hand began to tremble. Why would Adrien Russo have a photograph of her dead parents inside an antique watch?

Before she could process the shock, the bedroom door clicked open.

Adrien stood in the doorway, having discarded his suit jacket. His pale blue eyes immediately locked onto the watch in her hand.

For the first time, the composed mafia boss looked genuinely caught off guard. His expression darkened into something dangerous.

"Put that down," he said, his voice dropping an octave.

Elena took a step back, clutching the watch tightly.

"Why do you have a picture of my parents, Adrien?" her voice shook, but she refused to lower her gaze. "You said they died in a car accident. But you have this."

Adrien closed the door behind him and took a slow, measured step into the room.

"I told you I knew more about you than you think," he said evenly, extending his hand. "Give me the watch, Elena."

"No." She backed up until she hit the edge of the mattress. "My parents died three years ago. I thought you only looked into me because of Tommy's debt. But you've been watching me longer than that, haven't you?"

Adrien stopped. He looked at her, his jaw clenching.

"Your parents' car accident," Adrien said quietly, "wasn't an accident. They were run off the road by a man named Silvio. He worked for a rival family."

The air left Elena's lungs. "What?"

"They saw something they shouldn't have," Adrien continued, his tone devoid of emotion. "A transaction at the docks. Silvio tied up loose ends."

Tears blurred Elena's vision. Three years of grieving an accident, only to find out it was murder.

"Then why do you have this watch?" she cried.

"Because," Adrien stepped forward and gently pried her trembling fingers open, taking the watch back. "Silvio is dead. I killed him three years ago. And I kept the watch as proof that the debt was paid."

Elena stared at him, horrified and confused. "You avenged my parents? I didn't even know you."

Adrien closed the watch with a sharp click and slipped it into his pocket.

"No, Elena," he said softly, his eyes locking onto hers. "You didn't know me. But I have known you since the day you buried them."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, vibrating cell phone. He glanced at the screen, his expression immediately hardening into stone.

He looked up at Elena.

"Get dressed. We’re leaving."

May you like

"Why?" Elena asked, terrified by the sudden shift in his demeanor.

"Because," Adrien said, pulling a gun from his holster. "Tommy just tried to escape."
