Chapter 3 - THE POLAROID PHOTOGRAPH

The drive down the mountain was a blur of high-speed turns and oppressive silence.
Adrien drove his armored SUV with ruthless efficiency, his jaw locked, his eyes fixed on the rain-slicked road. Elena sat in the passenger seat, still wearing the emerald dress, clutching the leather armrest.
Her mind was reeling. Her parents were murdered. Adrien had avenged them. And now, Tommy was in immediate danger.
"Where are they holding him?" Elena finally asked, her voice tight.
"An abandoned warehouse near the south docks," Adrien answered curtly. "He was being kept there until we finalized our arrangement."
"And if he tried to escape?"
Adrien didn't answer. He didn't need to. The silence was terrifying enough.
They arrived at the docks twenty minutes later. The area was desolate, lit only by flickering amber streetlamps reflecting off the wet pavement.
Adrien parked behind a rust-covered shipping container. He drew his weapon, checking the chamber with a sharp click.
"Stay in the car," he ordered.
"He's my brother," Elena shot back, reaching for her door handle. "I'm coming with you."
"Elena, this isn't a restaurant. If things go wrong in there, I can't protect you if you're in the line of fire."
"I don't care," she said fiercely, looking him directly in the eye. "If Tommy dies tonight, whatever arrangement you wanted with me dies too."
Adrien stared at her. A flicker of something like respect crossed his face. He nodded once.
"Stay directly behind me. Do exactly what I say."
They moved through the shadows toward the crumbling brick warehouse. The heavy metal door was slightly ajar.
Adrien slipped inside, his gun raised. Elena followed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The interior was cavernous and damp, smelling of seawater and old oil. Near the center, illuminated by a single hanging bulb, was a heavy wooden chair.
It was empty. The ropes binding someone to it had been severed.
"He's gone," Elena whispered, a desperate hope flaring in her chest.
"No, he's not," a rough voice echoed from the darkness above.
Adrien instantly aimed his weapon toward the metal catwalk wrapping around the second floor.
Stepping into the dim light was a man holding a shotgun. Next to him was a younger man, his face bruised and swollen, his hands bound with zip ties.
"Tommy!" Elena screamed.
Her brother looked down, his eyes widening in terror. "Ellie! Run!"
"Shut up," the man with the shotgun growled, shoving Tommy closer to the railing. He looked down at Adrien. "Well, well. Boss Russo himself comes to collect the trash."
Adrien didn't lower his gun. "Marco," he said, his voice remarkably calm. "You're making a mistake."
Elena frowned. Marco?
She peered into the shadows. The man holding her brother hostage wasn't a mob enforcer she didn't recognize.
It was Marco. The sous-chef from the café where she worked mornings. The man who had insulted her appearance just hours ago.
"What are you doing?" Elena gasped.
Marco laughed, a bitter, ugly sound. "Working two jobs, Ellie. Just like you. You serve coffee. I collect debts for the Moretti family."
The Morettis. The rivals Adrien had mentioned.
"Tommy doesn't owe me money," Adrien said quietly to Elena, never taking his eyes off Marco. "He owes the Morettis. I bought his debt to keep him alive."
Elena’s stomach plummeted. Adrien hadn't been threatening her with Tommy's debt. He had been trying to shield her from it.
"The boss doesn't want Russo's money," Marco spat, cocking the shotgun. "He wants the territory Russo took when he killed Silvio three years ago. So, we're taking the boy. And now that you brought the girl..."
Marco reached into his pocket and pulled out a faded Polaroid photograph. He dropped it over the railing.
It fluttered down, landing at Elena's feet.
She picked it up.
It was a picture of her parents' car, crushed against a tree. But written on the bottom in red ink were the words: Russo ordered the hit.

"He's lying to you, Ellie," Marco sneered. "Russo didn't avenge your parents. He paid Silvio to kill them to take over the shipping routes. And he's been watching you out of guilt ever since."
Elena looked up at Adrien, her heart breaking in two.
