Chapter 12 - SHE HUNG THE VEIL IN THE WINDOW

That evening, the house was quiet again.

But it wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence of secrets. It was the comfortable silence of peace.

Mia was fast asleep in her new room, tucked under blankets my mother had bought that afternoon.

Luca was in his study, finalizing the adoption papers.

I walked alone down the grand staircase, carrying a garment bag.

Inside was the ivory wedding veil.

It had caused so much pain, uncovered so much betrayal.

But it was also the key that had unlocked my life.

I walked into the family chapel, located just off the east wing of the house.

It was small, lit only by a few flickering candles.

At the front of the chapel was a beautiful stained-glass window, depicting a dove in flight.

I walked up to the altar.

I unzipped the bag and carefully lifted the delicate ivory fabric.

The tiny embroidered lilies caught the candlelight.

I didn't want to hide it away in a chest ever again.

I wanted it to be seen. I wanted her to be remembered.

I carefully draped the veil over the wooden altar rail, right beneath the stained-glass window.

The moonlight filtered through the glass, illuminating the fabric in a soft, ethereal glow.

“She would have loved that,” a voice said behind me.

I turned.

Luca was standing in the doorway, his hands in his pockets.

“She loved the light,” he added, walking forward to stand beside me.

“It belongs here,” I said softly. “Not hidden in the dark.”

Luca looked at the veil, then down at me.

He reached out and squeezed my shoulder.

“You brought the light back, Emma. To all of us.”

We stood there for a long time, watching the candles flicker against the ivory silk.

The past was finally laid to rest.

The future was wide open.

I smiled, leaning my head against my brother’s shoulder.

And for the first time, I wasn't afraid of tomorrow.
