Chapter 12 - THE NEW LEGACY

I stared at the photograph, tears of pure joy prickling the corners of my eyes.

In the picture, I looked tired, bruised, and wearing a maid's uniform. But Luca was looking at me like I was the most precious thing in the world.

"She was right," Luca said softly, closing the small velvet box and slipping it back into his pocket.

He reached out, his warm hands cupping my face, his thumbs gently wiping away a stray tear that escaped down my cheek.

"I love you, Rachel," he murmured, the words carrying the weight of a vow. "I loved you when you stood up to Vanessa to protect my daughter. I loved you when you risked your life for my family. And I will love you for the rest of my days, if you'll let me."

I leaned into his touch, my heart swelling with a happiness I had never dared to imagine for myself.

"I love you, Luca," I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck.

He kissed me, a slow, deep, and profoundly tender kiss beneath the Roman stars, sealing a promise that no syndicate, no rival family, and no dark past could ever break.

Six months later, Chicago was buried under a beautiful, sparkling blanket of white snow.

The massive Moretti estate was no longer a fortress guarded by men in dark suits. The heavy iron gates were open, welcoming the laughter of friends and family.

The syndicate was officially dissolved, replaced by the Moretti-Bennett Holdings Corporation—a legitimate, highly successful real estate firm with my father serving enthusiastically on the board of directors.

It was Christmas Eve.

The mansion was decorated with pine garlands and thousands of twinkling lights.

I walked down the grand staircase, wearing a stunning emerald green evening gown, feeling completely, wonderfully at home.

My ribs had long since healed. The scars of the past were fading.

At the bottom of the stairs, standing by the massive, crackling fireplace, was Luca.

He looked up as I descended, that same fierce devotion lighting up his dark eyes.

Mia ran out of the kitchen, carrying a plate of freshly baked cookies, chased by Mrs. Carter who was scolding her good-naturedly about ruining her dinner.

"Dad, Rachel, look!" Mia laughed, setting the plate on the coffee table.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, familiar object.

It was the silver rosary.

The same rosary Vanessa had shattered in the trash bin.

"I took it to a jeweler in Boston," Mia beamed, holding it up to the firelight. "He fixed the chain. He said you can't even tell it was broken."

Luca walked over to his daughter, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, his eyes shining with pride.

"It's perfect, sweetheart," Luca said, kissing her temple.

He looked across the room at me, extending his hand.

I walked over, slipping my hand perfectly into his.

"Some things are stronger after they've been broken," Luca said quietly, his thumb tracing the back of my hand.

He reached into his jacket pocket.

But this time, he didn't pull out a photograph, a ticket, or a watch.

He pulled out a flawless, vintage diamond ring that had belonged to his grandmother.

Right there, in front of the roaring fire, surrounded by the family we had fought so hard to save, Luca Moretti dropped to one knee.

"Rachel Bennett," he said, his voice thick with emotion, looking up at me with a love that outshone the Christmas lights. "Will you marry me?"

I looked at my father, who was standing in the doorway with a tearful, joyous smile. I looked at Mia, who was bouncing on her heels in excitement.

And I looked at the man who had caught my heart when I was just trying to survive.

"Yes," I laughed, tears streaming down my face as he slid the ring onto my finger. "Yes, a thousand times, yes."

Luca stood up, pulling me into a crushing, breathless embrace as the room erupted into cheers.

I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.

The nightmare was over. The past was healed.

And our true legacy was finally beginning.
