Chapter 9 - THE UNBROKEN CHAIN

Absolute silence fell over the chapel as the white rose petals settled onto the marble floor.

Vanessa stared at the destroyed detonator, her hands trembling violently.

Her greatest weapon was gone. The explosives were useless.

"Guards!" Vanessa shrieked, turning wildly toward the men in dark suits lining the walls. "Shoot them! Honor my father!"

The Romano guards drew their weapons.

But before a single shot could be fired, the elderly syndicate boss in the front pew raised his cane and slammed it heavily against the wooden floor.

CRACK.

"Lower your weapons," the old boss commanded, his voice raspy but carrying the weight of absolute authority.

The Romano guards hesitated.

"You swore allegiance to the syndicate, not to a ghost," the boss continued, staring them down. "Carmine Romano is dead. The truce holds. If you fire a weapon in this chapel, you will not leave it alive."

Slowly, one by one, the Romano guards lowered their guns, placing them on the pews and stepping back, surrendering to the overwhelming numbers of Luca's loyal men.

Vanessa realized she was completely alone.

She crumpled to her knees in her stained wedding dress, sobbing in furious, helpless defeat.

Luca didn't even look at her as Daniel and two enforcers stepped forward to pull her to her feet, dragging her out the side doors to face the syndicate's private justice.

The threat was neutralized. The empire was secure.

Luca turned around.

He didn't address the bosses. He didn't check on his guards.

He walked directly over to me, kneeling on the marble floor where I was still clutching my aching ribs.

"Rachel," he said softly, his dark eyes filled with an overwhelming, tender gratitude that took my breath away.

He gently helped me to my feet, supporting my weight with a strong arm around my waist.

My father rushed down the aisle, pulling me into a desperate hug the moment Luca let go.

"I'm okay, Dad," I promised, crying into his shoulder. "I'm okay."

Mia ran up behind him, throwing her arms around both of us.

"You saved my dad," Mia cried, looking at me with absolute adoration. "You saved all of us."

Luca stood beside us, watching the embrace.

The syndicate bosses began to murmur, clearly uncomfortable with the display of emotion and the presence of a maid at the center of their political drama.

"Luca," the elderly boss said, clearing his throat. "This is highly irregular. The woman is a domestic worker. The bookkeeper is a traitor who stole from your father."

Luca turned to face the most powerful men in the Midwest.

He stood tall, adjusting his suit jacket, his presence commanding the entire room.

"Thomas Bennett is not a traitor," Luca declared, his voice echoing off the stained glass. "He is a man of honor who prevented a senseless war. He is under my permanent protection, and his debts to this family are forgiven in full."

The bosses shifted uneasily, but no one dared argue with the Don.

Then Luca turned to me.

He reached out and gently took my hand, lacing his fingers through mine in front of the entire assembly.

My face burned, but I didn't pull away. His grip was warm and anchoring.

"And Rachel Bennett," Luca continued, his voice softening just enough for everyone to hear the profound respect in his tone, "is not a domestic worker."

He looked down at me, a small, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth for the first time in days.

"She is the bravest woman I have ever known. And she will never wear an apron in my house again."

A collective gasp rippled through the pews, but Luca ignored them.

He turned to my father. "Mr. Bennett, I have arranged a secure estate for you in Lincoln Park. You will be safe there. I promise you."

My father nodded, tears in his eyes, finally free of the secret he had carried for twenty years.

The wedding was over. The nightmare was finished.

As the chapel emptied, Luca led me out into the bright morning sunlight of the courtyard.

Mia walked beside us, laughing as Mrs. Carter fussed over her torn coat.

May you like

For the first time in my life, I wasn't terrified of the future. I wasn't worrying about rent or hiding from dangerous men.

I looked at Luca, the feared mafia boss who had risked his empire to save my father, and I knew that whatever happened next, I wouldn't be facing it alone.
