Chapter 12 - THE MUSIC BOX

Gabriel’s hands trembled as he unfolded the letter.
The music box continued to play the sweet, familiar lullaby, filling the sunlit room with a sense of profound peace. I stood beside him, holding Leo in my arms, resting my head against Gabriel’s shoulder as he read the words left behind by the woman who had saved him.
My dearest Gabriel,
If you are reading this, it means you have found the truth, and you have found my Elina. I could not raise you, but I never stopped loving you. You were the first child I ever held, the first soul I ever promised to protect. I gave you back to your father so you could live, but I always feared the darkness of the Corsi family would consume the bright, loving boy I knew.
Gabriel let out a ragged breath, a tear dropping onto the parchment.
I left this estate to Elina, knowing Vincenzo would hunt her if she ever stepped foot in the city. But this music box is for you. It plays the song I sang to you when you were a baby. I want you to remember that your blood does not define you. You are not a monster. You are a protector.
If Elina is with you, please, take care of her. And let her take care of you. You both deserve a life in the light.
Forever your guardian,
Maria.
Gabriel slowly lowered the letter. He closed his eyes, letting the final notes of the music box wash over him.
The heavy, suffocating burden of the mafia boss he had been forced to become finally shattered completely. He wasn't Vincenzo’s weapon. He wasn't Antonio’s ruthless heir.
He was a man who had been saved by love, and who had, in turn, saved the daughter of the woman who rescued him.
He turned to me, his dark eyes clear and remarkably bright.
"She saved me," Gabriel whispered, pulling me into his chest. "And you saved my son."
I wrapped my free arm around his neck, holding him tightly as he buried his face in my hair. "We saved each other."
Leo babbled happily between us, reaching up to pat Gabriel’s cheek, his tiny fingers brushing against the scar. Gabriel smiled, a true, brilliant smile that reached his eyes, and kissed his son's forehead.
One year later.
The white roses were in full bloom, blanketing the countryside in a sea of pure white.
The restaurant in the city was a distant memory. The Corsi mafia empire was dismantled, replaced by legitimate charities and vineyards that Gabriel managed with passion and integrity.
I was sitting on a woven blanket in the garden, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant shades of pink and gold.
Leo, now nearly two years old, was running unsteadily across the grass, giggling uncontrollably as Gabriel chased him.
Gabriel caught him, scooping the boy high into the air, their laughter echoing across the peaceful estate.
He walked over and sat beside me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. He pulled the cracked pocket watch from his pocket.
He had taken it to a jeweler. The glass was fixed, and the internal gears were repaired.
The hands were no longer frozen at 3:15.
They were ticking steadily, moving forward.
Time had finally started again.
Gabriel leaned over and kissed me, soft and deep, as Leo snuggled into my lap.
We had left the darkness behind. We had broken the cycle of violence and reclaimed our lives.

As the music box played softly from the open window of the villa, I looked at the family we had built from the shattered pieces of our past, and I knew my mother was right.
We were finally living in the light.
