Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

The morning sun bathed the penthouse in a warm, golden light.
I stood by the shattered window, holding the wooden rosary, staring at the note in my mother’s handwriting.
The place where the white roses grow.
“Do you know where that is?” I asked Gabriel softly.
He was holding Leo, who had just woken up and was happily gripping Gabriel’s thumb. Gabriel looked at the note, a soft, nostalgic smile touching his lips.
“Yes,” he said. “My mother owned a small, private estate in the countryside. She grew acres of white roses. She retreated there whenever the mafia life became too much for her.”
That afternoon, we left the city behind.
Gabriel had officially stepped down as the head of the Corsi family, handing control over to a trusted, clean lieutenant. He surrendered the illicit assets, keeping only the legitimate businesses. He was no longer a mob boss. He was just a father.
And I was no longer a broke waitress hiding from a past I didn't understand. I was Elina Corsi, the rightful heir who had chosen freedom over an empire.
We drove for two hours until the dense city faded into rolling green hills and sprawling vineyards.
The estate was breathtaking. A beautiful, rustic Italian-style villa surrounded by endless rows of blooming white roses that perfumed the crisp autumn air.
As we pulled up to the gravel driveway, a gentle, elderly caretaker stepped out of the front door. He recognized Gabriel immediately, offering a warm smile.
But when the caretaker looked at me, tears filled his eyes.
“You have her face,” the old man whispered, bowing his head respectfully. “Your mother asked me to keep this safe for you, Elina. She said you would return when the time was right.”
He handed me a small, locked wooden box, intricately carved with white roses.
Gabriel stood beside me, holding Leo, wrapping a strong, protective arm around my waist. “Open it,” he encouraged gently.
I unlatched the brass lock.
Inside the box were dozens of letters, written back and forth between my mother and Gabriel’s mother. They hadn't just known each other; they were best friends. They had secretly orchestrated my mother’s escape to protect me and Sofia from Vincenzo. Gabriel’s mother had funded our lives in secret until Vincenzo discovered the truth.
Beneath the letters lay a stack of legal documents.
I pulled them out. It was the deed to the estate, legally transferred into my name eighteen years ago.
“This is yours, Elina,” Gabriel said, looking out over the beautiful vineyards. “My mother built this for you and Sofia. A sanctuary.”
I looked down at the paperwork, tears of pure joy and relief blurring my vision. I wasn't an orphan. I had never been abandoned. I had been fiercely loved and protected by two incredible women who sacrificed everything to keep me safe.
Leo suddenly reached out from Gabriel’s arms, his tiny hands grasping for my shirt.
I smiled, taking the baby and holding him tight against my chest. He let out a happy sigh, resting his head exactly where it belonged.
“Mama,” Leo babbled softly.
Gabriel’s breath hitched. It was the baby’s first word.
He looked at me, his dark eyes filled with overwhelming love and gratitude. He leaned in and kissed my forehead, then softly kissed my lips.
“Welcome home, Elina,” Gabriel whispered.
We had survived the darkness. We had reclaimed our dignity, uncovered the truth, and repaired the shattered pieces of our past.
As I stood in the sunlight, surrounded by the white roses, holding the man I was falling in love with and the child who already had my heart, I knew I was finally, truly safe.

But as Gabriel carried Leo inside to explore the house, I remained on the porch, looking through the wooden box one last time.
At the very bottom, hidden beneath the velvet lining, was a vintage, cracked pocket watch.
