Chapter 2 - The Missing Photograph

The silence in the dining room was absolute.

Twenty-eight wealthy, influential guests held their breath, their eyes darting between the mafia boss and the woman who had just spectacularly destroyed her own future.

Luca didn't raise his voice. He didn't move. He just stared at Vanessa, his dark eyes burning with a terrifying, coiled intensity.

"Who were you planning to introduce as my mother, Vanessa?" Luca repeated, the words dropping like stones into the quiet room.

Vanessa’s confidence, which had cracked when he ended the engagement, finally shattered. She took a step backward, her heels scraping against the marble floor.

"Luca, please," Vanessa stammered, her face draining of color. "Your mother misunderstood me. I never said she couldn't come to the wedding."

"You told her she couldn't sit with the family," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You told her to keep her head down. And you told her I had already agreed to let someone else stand beside me."

Luca took a slow step forward. "Who?"

Vanessa looked around the room, desperate for an ally, but her own parents were staring at their plates, unwilling to meet Luca's eyes.

"It was just an idea," Vanessa pleaded, her voice trembling. "For the photographs. My mother thought... she thought it would look more cohesive if my Aunt Clara stood in for the formal portraits. Clara has the right... pedigree."

The word hung in the air, ugly and unforgivable.

Pedigree.

Teresa Moretti had worked twenty-one years in a diner to raise the man standing in front of them, but because she didn't come from old money, Vanessa had tried to erase her from her own son's wedding.

Luca didn't yell. He didn't explode.

He slowly turned his head and looked at Dominic Bellini, Vanessa’s father, who was sitting near the center of the table.

"Dominic," Luca said softly. "Is this how the Bellini family operates? You try to replace the mother of the man your daughter is marrying?"

Dominic shifted uncomfortably, clearing his throat. "Luca, let's not let emotions run wild. Vanessa is young. She was just thinking about the aesthetics of the event."

"The aesthetics," Luca repeated flatly.

He turned back to Vanessa. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, heavy silver key. He tossed it onto the table. It clattered against the fine china.

"That’s the key to the penthouse," Luca said coldly. "You have one hour to pack your aesthetics and get out of my home. If you are still there when I arrive, I will have Daniel physically remove you."

Vanessa let out a strangled sob, covering her face as she turned and practically ran from the dining room, the heavy doors swinging shut behind her.

Dominic Bellini stood up, his face flushed with anger. "You disrespect my family, Moretti. We had an arrangement."

"The arrangement is void," Luca said, not breaking eye contact. "Take your family and leave my restaurant."

The Bellini family and their guests stood up in tense silence, filing out of the room until only Luca, his mother, the security detail, and I remained.

The heavy doors clicked shut.

Luca exhaled a long, shaky breath. He turned back to Teresa, who was still sitting in the chair, looking utterly exhausted and heartbroken.

Luca knelt beside her again, gently taking her trembling hands. "Mom, I am so sorry. I should have seen what she was doing. I should have protected you."

Teresa shook her head, offering a weak, loving smile. "You protected me tonight, sweetheart. That's all that matters."

"It isn't," Luca said, his voice thick with guilt. "I brought her into this house."

Teresa reached out and gently cupped his cheek. "You wanted to be happy, Luca. There is no shame in hoping someone is better than they are."

She looked over at me, standing awkwardly near the service station.

"Hannah," Teresa said softly. "Thank you for trying to catch the tray."

I managed a small, sad smile. "I'm just sorry I couldn't catch it faster, Mrs. Moretti."

Luca stood up, looking at me. The terrifying mafia boss who had just humiliated the Bellini family looked entirely different when he spoke to me.

"Hannah," Luca said quietly. "Take the rest of the night off. With pay. My mother needs to rest."

"Yes, sir," I nodded, untying my own apron.

But before I could leave, Teresa spoke again.

"Luca, sweetheart?"

"Yes, Mom?"

"Before I go upstairs," Teresa said, her voice dropping to a nervous whisper, "I need you to look in my purse."

Luca frowned. "Why?"

Teresa pointed to a small, beaded clutch resting on the side table. "When Vanessa told me I couldn't be in the wedding photos, she showed me a picture. To prove her point. She said... she said it was a picture of you and Clara."

Luca’s brow furrowed in deep confusion. "I have never taken a picture with her Aunt Clara."

Teresa’s eyes filled with fresh tears. "I know, sweetheart. But she had a photograph. And she left it on the dressing table upstairs. I took it."

Luca walked over to the side table, picked up the beaded clutch, and unclasped it. He reached inside and pulled out a standard, glossy 4x6 photograph.

He stared at it.

I watched his face change. The guilt and sadness vanished, instantly replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.

"Mom," Luca whispered, his voice trembling so badly he could barely speak. "Where did you say Vanessa got this?"

"She said it was from her family album," Teresa answered, frightened by her son's reaction. "Why? What is it?"

Luca didn't show her the picture. He shoved it deep into his inside jacket pocket, his knuckles turning white.

"Daniel," Luca snapped, turning to his head of security. "Lock down the estate. Nobody enters, nobody leaves. I don't care if it's the police."

"Sir?" Daniel asked, startled by the sudden panic. "Is everything alright?"

"No," Luca said, his eyes wild and dark. He looked at his mother, then at me. "Hannah, take my mother up to her room. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone but me."

"Luca, you're scaring me," Teresa cried, trying to stand. "What was in the picture?"

Luca knelt one last time, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss to her forehead. "I'm going to fix this, Mom. I promise."

He stood up and sprinted out of the dining room.

I hurried over to Teresa, helping her to her feet. My heart was hammering against my ribs.

We made our way up the grand staircase to her bedroom. I locked the heavy oak door and slid the deadbolt into place, just as Luca had ordered.

Teresa sat on the edge of her bed, clutching her hands together. "What is happening, Hannah?"

"I don't know, Mrs. Moretti," I whispered, sitting beside her.

We waited in terrified silence for twenty minutes.

Then, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Someone tried the door handle. It was locked.

Then, a voice called out from the other side.

"Teresa? Open the door. It's me."

Teresa gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

I froze, the blood draining completely from my face.

I recognized the voice. But it was impossible.

It was Antonio Moretti.

May you like

Luca’s father.

The man who had been dead for seven years.
