Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

The heavy fog swirled around the pier, thick and suffocating.

I sat frozen in the cab of the forklift, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles ached.

Julian Moretti smirked, rolling his shoulders as if shaking off a mild inconvenience. The blood from where Daniel had slammed his head against the SUV was already drying on his forehead.

"Did you really think a cheap trunk lock was going to hold me, Luca?" Julian laughed, his voice raspy and cruel. "I learned how to pick locks before you were even born."

Luca stood perfectly still, his eyes darting between Julian’s gun and the heavy assault rifle in Dominic Bellini’s hands.

"You partnered with Dominic," Luca said, his voice dead flat. "You sold out your own brother for money twenty years ago, and now you’re selling out your nephew."

"I'm taking back what was mine," Julian sneered. "Antonio stole my inheritance when he exiled me. Dominic promised me half the territory once you were out of the picture."

"And you believed him?" Luca scoffed, a dark, mocking tone creeping into his voice. "Dominic doesn't share power, Julian. The moment I’m dead, he’s going to put a bullet in the back of your head."

Dominic Bellini chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that echoed across the wet concrete. "Don't try to play mind games, Luca. It’s over. Hand over the ledger."

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, retreating quickly behind her father’s massive frame, her face pale and streaked with dirt. "Kill him, Dad! He ruined everything!"

Dominic ignored his daughter completely. He kept his rifle trained squarely on Luca's chest. "The ledger, Moretti. Now."

Luca looked down at the leather-bound book in his hand. The proof of Dominic's human trafficking ring. The one piece of leverage Antonio had used to keep the Bellini family in check for two decades.

"If I give you this," Luca said calmly, "you kill me anyway."

"Probably," Dominic admitted with a shrug. "But if you don't, I kill the brave little housemaid sitting in the forklift first."

My heart stopped.

Dominic shifted his rifle, aiming it directly at my face through the windshield of the forklift.

"No!" Luca roared, taking a step forward.

"Stop right there!" Julian yelled, cocking his pistol.

Luca froze. He looked at me, his dark eyes filled with a sudden, desperate panic that hadn't been there when his own life was threatened.

"Don't do it, Luca," I whispered, though I knew he couldn't hear me over the wind. If he gave them the ledger, they would slaughter everyone on the pier.

Luca slowly raised the ledger. "Take it. Let the girl go."

"Toss it," Dominic ordered.

Luca pulled his arm back, preparing to throw the heavy book across the concrete.

But as he moved, a sharp, echoing crack shattered the tense silence of the pier.

It wasn't a gunshot.

It was the sound of a heavy sniper rifle echoing from the roof of the warehouse behind us.

Before anyone could react, the assault rifle in Dominic Bellini’s hands exploded into a shower of metal and sparks.

The sniper hadn't aimed for Dominic's body. He had aimed precisely at the weapon's receiver, destroying it instantly.

Dominic shrieked, dropping the ruined, smoking rifle, clutching his stinging hands.

"Now, Daniel!" Luca bellowed.

From the shadows behind the forklift, Daniel burst forward. He didn't hesitate. He raised his sidearm and fired two rapid shots.

Julian Moretti gasped, his eyes going wide. He dropped his gun, clutching his chest as two dark stains blossomed across his expensive suit. He fell backward, hitting the concrete with a heavy thud, dead before he even realized what had happened.

The pier erupted into absolute chaos.

Luca’s tactical team, having used the distraction to reposition, surged forward from behind the concrete barriers, overwhelming the remaining Bellini guards.

Dominic Bellini, realizing his army had fallen and his weapon was destroyed, turned and sprinted toward the edge of the pier, desperate to escape.

"Stop him!" Vanessa screamed, but she wasn't yelling at her father's men. She was yelling at Luca.

Luca didn't need the encouragement. He sprinted after Dominic, tackling the massive man just inches from the edge of the dock.

They crashed to the concrete, rolling violently. Dominic threw a heavy, desperate punch, catching Luca in the jaw. Luca staggered, but he didn't fall. He recovered instantly, driving his knee into Dominic’s ribs and pinning him to the ground.

Luca pressed the barrel of his handgun directly between Dominic Bellini’s eyes.

"You’re finished, Dominic," Luca breathed, his chest heaving, blood dripping from a cut on his lip. "The trafficking ring, the bomb, the murder attempts. It’s over."

Dominic glared up at him, a bloody smile twisting his face. "You won't shoot me, Moretti. If you kill a Boss, the Commission will put a hit on your entire family. You’ll be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life."

Luca stared down at the man who had tormented his family for twenty years.

He slowly lowered the gun.

Dominic let out a triumphant laugh. "That's what I thought. You’re soft, just like your father."

"I'm not soft," Luca said coldly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone. He hit a single button and held the screen down so Dominic could see it.

"I just sent the digital scans of my father's ledger to the FBI, the DEA, and every major news outlet in Chicago," Luca said smoothly.

Dominic’s triumphant smile vanished. His face turned an ashen, sickly gray.

"By tomorrow morning," Luca continued, his voice void of any emotion, "you will be the most hunted man in America. The Feds will freeze your accounts, seize your properties, and lock you in a federal supermax for the rest of your miserable life. And the Commission? They won't protect a rat who gets caught trafficking. They’ll probably send someone to finish you off in prison."

Luca stood up, holstering his weapon, and looked down at the broken mafia boss.

"I don't have to kill you, Dominic. You're already dead."

Luca turned his back on him and walked away.

The tactical team moved in, zip-tying Dominic and dragging him toward the waiting police sirens that were finally wailing in the distance.

Vanessa Bellini stood alone near the edge of the pier, trembling, surrounded by Luca's armed men. She looked at Luca, tears streaming down her face, finally realizing that her arrogance had cost her everything.

"Luca, please," Vanessa begged, her voice pathetic and small. "I didn't know about the bomb. Julian lied to me. Please, you have to protect me."

Luca stopped walking. He didn't look at her.

"You aren't my problem anymore, Vanessa," Luca said quietly. "Take her to the police."

As his men led her away, Luca finally looked up. He walked toward the forklift, his shoulders slumping, the adrenaline finally leaving his body.

I climbed down from the cab, my knees shaking so badly I almost collapsed.

Luca caught me, wrapping his strong arms around me, pulling me tight against his chest. He smelled like gunpowder, rain, and expensive cologne.

"I told you to stay at the safe house," Luca whispered into my hair, his voice thick with emotion.

"I told you I was sorry I couldn't catch the tray," I replied, burying my face in his shoulder. "I guess I made up for it."

Luca let out a exhausted, genuine laugh. He pulled back, looking down at me with a profound, terrifying tenderness.

"You saved my life, Hannah," Luca said softly.

"You saved mine," I answered.

For a long moment, we just stood there in the fog, the chaos of the harbor fading away.

But the peace didn't last.

Daniel came jogging over, his face grim, holding a ringing cell phone.

"Boss," Daniel interrupted, looking extremely uncomfortable. "It's your mother."

Luca frowned, taking the phone. "Mom? Are you okay?"

I watched the color drain from Luca's face in real-time. His eyes widened, and a look of sheer, absolute terror washed over his features.

"What do you mean she's gone?" Luca gasped, his voice cracking.

May you like

He lowered the phone slowly, staring at me.

"Hannah," Luca whispered, his voice trembling. "My mother isn't at the safe house."
