Chapter 10 - The Falling Gun

The silenced gunshot sounded like a sharp exhale in the massive cathedral, but the result was devastatingly final.

Vincenzo Moretti’s eyes widened in sheer shock. The heavy revolver slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly against the stone floor. He crumpled backward, hitting the ground with a dull thud, his arrogant smile frozen on his face forever.

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the heavy breathing of the tactical team securing the room.

Luca didn't lower his gun immediately. He stood perfectly still, his chest heaving, staring at the man he had just killed. His cousin. His blood.

The reality of what he had done to protect his mother crashed over him, and for a terrifying second, I thought the invincible Mafia Don was going to break.

"Luca!" Teresa cried out, struggling against the ropes binding her to the chair.

The sound of his mother’s voice snapped Luca out of his trance. He shoved his weapons into his holsters and sprinted across the rectory, falling to his knees beside her.

He pulled a switchblade from his pocket and frantically cut the thick ropes, tossing them aside.

"Mom," Luca choked out, his hands trembling as he gently cradled her face, examining the nasty bruise on her cheek. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I let this happen."

Teresa didn't cry. She wrapped her arms tightly around her son’s neck, pulling him into a fierce, desperate embrace.

"You have nothing to apologize for, my brave boy," Teresa whispered, kissing the soot and dirt on his forehead. "You brought me home."

I watched them from behind the wooden pew, my own tears finally spilling over. The terror of the night, the explosions, the gunfire—it all faded away seeing the profound, unbreakable love between the mother who waited tables and the son who built an empire for her.

"Clear the building!" Daniel shouted, snapping me back to reality. "We need to move before the police respond to the shots!"

Daniel rushed over to me, extending a hand to help me up. "You okay, Hannah?"

"I think so," I stammered, my legs shaking violently as I stood. I realized I was still clutching the silenced pistol Luca had given me. I handed it back to Daniel quickly, as if it burned my fingers.

Luca stood up, helping his mother to her feet. He looked across the room and saw me standing there, wearing his oversized, dirt-stained suit jacket.

He didn't say a word. He walked over, bypassing Daniel entirely, and pulled me into a crushing, desperate hug.

"You stupid, brave girl," Luca whispered into my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "I told you to hide."

"I did hide," I mumbled into his shoulder, feeling the rapid, frantic beating of his heart. "Eventually."

Luca let out a exhausted, genuine laugh. He pulled back, keeping his hands firmly on my shoulders, looking deep into my eyes.

"I owe you my life, Hannah," Luca said softly. "And my mother's."

"You don't owe me anything," I replied, a small smile touching my lips. "I just wanted to make sure Mrs. Moretti could come to your wedding."

The reminder of the engagement dinner—the catalyst for this entire nightmare—made Luca’s smile vanish. The reality of his fractured life settled heavily over him.

"There isn't going to be a wedding," Luca said quietly.

"Boss, we have to go," Daniel interrupted urgently. "The police scanners are lighting up. They’re converging on the harbor and the cathedral."

Luca nodded, his expression hardening back into the decisive leader. "Get my mother to the secondary safe house in the suburbs. Take a ghost car. No trackers."

"What about you?" Teresa asked, panic returning to her eyes.

"I have to finish this," Luca said grimly. "Dominic Bellini is in police custody, and Vanessa is on the run. The Commission will want answers by morning. If I don't give them a clean resolution, they will start a war in the streets."

"Luca, please," Teresa begged, grabbing his arm. "No more killing. Let the police handle them."

"I'm not going to kill anyone, Mom," Luca promised, pressing a gentle kiss to her hand. "I’m going to do what Dad should have done twenty years ago. I’m going to tell the truth."

Ten minutes later, I was sitting in the back of an unmarked, bulletproof sedan with Teresa. Daniel was driving, navigating the dark, rain-slicked suburban streets with practiced efficiency.

Teresa leaned her head against the window, watching the city lights blur past. She looked exhausted, her beautiful silver hair tangled, her evening gown ruined.

"Mrs. Moretti?" I asked softly, hesitant to break the silence.

She turned to look at me, a warm, maternal smile gracing her bruised face. "You don't have to call me Mrs. Moretti anymore, Hannah. I think we've earned a first-name basis."

I smiled back. "Teresa... what did Luca mean when he said he was going to tell the truth?"

Teresa sighed heavily, her eyes reflecting a deep, old sorrow. "The Mafia Commission operates on a strict code of silence. Omertà. If a Boss goes to the police, he is considered a rat. The penalty is death."

My blood ran cold. "But Luca said he sent the digital scans of Dominic’s ledger to the FBI!"

"He did," Teresa nodded. "He sacrificed his own standing in the underworld to protect us. By morning, the Commission will brand him a traitor. He won't be a Boss anymore, Hannah. He’ll be a target."

"We have to warn him!" I panicked, leaning forward toward the front seat. "Daniel, turn the car around!"

"I can't," Daniel said grimly, keeping his eyes on the road. "Luca knew exactly what he was doing when he hit send. He planned this."

"Planned what?" I demanded.

"His exit," Daniel explained quietly. "Luca never wanted the empire. He only took it over because he thought his father wanted him to protect it. But after hearing Vincenzo's confession... after realizing his father built this life on a lie to protect a thief... Luca is burning it all down."

I sat back in my seat, stunned. Luca was dismantling his own criminal empire overnight.

"Where is he going?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"He’s going to turn himself in," Daniel said, the words hitting me like a physical blow. "He’s going to hand the original ledger to the FBI personally, in exchange for full immunity for his mother and his loyal men."

"He’s going to prison?" I gasped, tears instantly welling in my eyes.

"No," Teresa said softly, reaching over and taking my hand. "He’s going into Witness Protection."

The realization settled over me like a heavy blanket. Luca Moretti, the terrifying, untouchable Mafia Don, was giving up his wealth, his power, and his name, just to make sure his mother was safe.

He was going to disappear.

And I would never see him again.

I looked down at the oversized suit jacket still draped over my shoulders. It smelled like him. It was the only piece of him I had left.

"When?" I whispered, a tear slipping down my cheek.

"Tonight," Daniel said as he pulled the sedan into the hidden driveway of a quiet, unassuming suburban home. "He meets the Feds at dawn."

We walked into the safe house. It was modest, warm, and entirely un-mafia.

Teresa went straight to the guest bedroom, exhausted beyond measure.

I sat on the sofa in the living room, staring blankly at the wall. The adrenaline had finally worn off, leaving me feeling hollow and profoundly sad.

I had survived a bombing, a hostage situation, and a mafia war. But the thought of Luca walking away into the shadows hurt more than any of it.

I pulled my knees to my chest, burying my face in Luca's jacket, and finally allowed myself to cry.

I don't know how long I sat there, sobbing quietly in the dark.

Suddenly, the front door of the safe house clicked open.

I jumped up, wiping my eyes, expecting Daniel returning from a perimeter check.

May you like

But it wasn't Daniel.

Standing in the doorway, wearing a simple black t-shirt and jeans, looking exhausted but incredibly peaceful, was Luca Moretti.
