Chapter 11 - The Final Choice

I froze, staring at him in the dim light of the safe house living room.

Luca closed the heavy door quietly behind him. He didn't have his weapons. He didn't have the terrifying aura of a Mafia Don. He just looked like a man who had finally put down a burden he had carried for too long.

"Luca?" I breathed, unable to believe my eyes. "Daniel said you were meeting the FBI at dawn. He said you were going into Witness Protection."

Luca walked slowly toward me, a faint, genuine smile touching his bruised lips. "I am. The meeting is in two hours."

"Then what are you doing here?" I asked, my voice trembling.

He stopped a few feet away, looking at me with an intensity that made my heart hammer in my chest.

"I came to say goodbye to my mother," Luca said softly. "And to give you something."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick, white envelope. He held it out to me.

I hesitated before taking it. It was heavy. "What is this?"

"A new life," Luca answered simply. "It’s a cashier’s check for two million dollars. It’s clean money, Hannah. From a legitimate real estate sale I finalized months ago. It can't be traced to the family."

I stared at the envelope, the astronomical number failing to process in my exhausted brain. "Two million dollars? Luca, I can't take this. I’m just your housemaid."

"You haven't been just a housemaid for a long time," Luca said, his voice dropping to a tender, intimate register. "You saved my mother’s life. You stood up to Vanessa when no one else would. You walked into a catacomb with a gun you didn't know how to use just to give me a chance."

He stepped closer, his dark eyes searching my face. "You showed me that loyalty isn't bought with fear or money. It’s earned with respect. I want you to take this money, pay for your father’s medical care, and go live a beautiful, quiet life. Far away from Chicago. Far away from this violence."

Tears spilled down my cheeks. I clutched the envelope tightly against my chest. "Where will you go?"

"I don't know yet," Luca admitted, a hint of vulnerability breaking through. "The Feds will give me a new name. A new city. I’ll probably end up managing a hardware store in Idaho or something."

He laughed, a self-deprecating, dry sound. "It’s going to be an adjustment."

"Will you be safe?" I whispered.

"Yes," Luca nodded firmly. "Dominic is in federal custody. The ledger gave the FBI enough evidence to arrest the entire Bellini hierarchy. The Commission is scrambling. They won't have the resources to look for a ghost."

He looked toward the hallway leading to the guest bedrooms. "I need to wake my mother. We have to leave soon."

"She’s going with you?" I asked, a wave of relief washing over me.

"Of course," Luca smiled. "She’d never survive witness protection without me. And I’d never survive it without her."

He turned to walk down the hall, but he stopped and looked back at me one last time.

"Goodbye, Hannah Collins," Luca said, his voice thick with unsaid words. "Thank you for everything."

"Goodbye, Luca," I whispered.

He disappeared down the hall.

I stood in the quiet living room, holding the envelope that held my future. Two million dollars. I could buy a house for my parents. I could go to college. I could never scrub another floor for as long as I lived.

It was a dream come true.

So why did it feel like my heart was breaking?

I walked over to the small kitchen counter and set the envelope down. I stared at the blank white paper.

A beautiful, quiet life.

I looked down at the oversized suit jacket I was still wearing. It still smelled like him.

I made my decision.

Ten minutes later, Luca emerged from the hallway, carrying two small duffel bags. Teresa walked beside him, holding his arm. She wore a simple sweater and jeans, looking incredibly frail but fiercely determined.

"We're ready," Luca said to Daniel, who was waiting by the front door.

"The transport van is waiting out back, Boss," Daniel said, checking his watch. "The Feds are expecting us at the rendezvous point in thirty minutes."

Teresa walked over to me. She didn't say a word. She just wrapped her arms around me in a tight, maternal hug.

"Have a wonderful life, sweetheart," Teresa whispered in my ear. "Thank you for being so brave."

"You too, Teresa," I hugged her back, tears blurring my vision.

She pulled away, offering a brave smile, and walked out the back door with Daniel.

Luca stood by the door, looking at me one last time. He gave a small, respectful nod, turned, and stepped out into the cool night air.

The heavy door clicked shut behind him.

The safe house was suddenly completely silent.

I looked at the white envelope on the kitchen counter.

Then, I grabbed my coat.

I ran out the back door.

The black transport van was idling in the alley, its headlights cutting through the darkness. Daniel was climbing into the driver’s seat. Luca was just about to slide the side door shut.

"Luca! Wait!" I yelled, sprinting across the wet pavement.

Luca froze, holding the door open. He stepped out of the van, looking confused and panicked. "Hannah? What's wrong? Did someone follow us?"

"No," I gasped, stopping a few feet away, trying to catch my breath.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the white envelope.

I held it out to him.

"I don't want it," I said, my voice shaking but absolutely certain.

Luca stared at the envelope, utterly bewildered. "Hannah, what are you doing? That money is yours."

"I don't want a quiet life in Chicago without you," I blurted out, the truth finally spilling over. "I don't care if you manage a hardware store in Idaho. I don't care if you have a new name. I just... I want to go with you."

Luca’s breath hitched. He stared at me, his dark eyes wide with shock.

"Hannah," Luca whispered, stepping closer, his voice laced with a desperate, beautiful hope. "You don't know what you're asking. Witness Protection means you can never come back. You can never contact your old life again. You’d have to leave your parents."

"My parents are safe now," I argued, tears spilling down my cheeks. "The money from the estate will take care of them. But they raised me to follow my heart. And my heart is getting into this van."

I looked up into his eyes, refusing to back down. "You told me loyalty isn't bought with money. It’s earned with respect. You earned mine, Luca. And I think... I think I earned yours."

Luca looked at me for a long, silent moment. The heavy burden he had carried his entire life seemed to suddenly evaporate in the cool night air.

He didn't take the envelope.

Instead, he reached out, wrapped his hands around my waist, and pulled me flush against his chest.

He kissed me.

It wasn't a desperate, panicked kiss. It was deep, profound, and overwhelmingly certain. It felt like the end of a very long war, and the beginning of a beautiful peace.

When he finally pulled away, he rested his forehead against mine, breathing heavily, a massive, genuine smile breaking across his face.

"Idaho, huh?" Luca whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek.

"I hear the potatoes are lovely," I laughed through my tears.

From the back of the van, Teresa leaned her head out the window, a beaming, joyous smile on her face. "Are you two going to stand in the alley all night, or are we going to catch our flight?"

Luca laughed, the sound bright and clear.

May you like

He took my hand, his fingers intertwining securely with mine.

"Come on," Luca said, pulling me toward the van. "Let's go home."
