Chapter 2 - THE NAME ON THE BACK OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

Vanessa’s face lost every drop of color.

The dining room was so quiet I could hear the ice melting in the crystal water pitchers.

Luca didn’t look at his fiancée.

He kept his eyes on Rosa.

“What do you mean, she knows who the baby is?” Luca asked, his voice dangerously calm.

Rosa’s hands trembled, but her chin remained high.

“Look at the back of the photograph, Luciano.”

Luca flipped the old picture over.

I stood close enough to see the six words written in his father’s faded, elegant handwriting.

The true blood of my enemy.

Luca frowned. “The Bellinis?”

“Yes,” Rosa whispered. “Your father discovered Vincent Bellini had an affair with a maid. When the maid died in childbirth, Vincent didn't want the scandal of a bastard child ruining his political connections.”

Vanessa stood up. Her chair scraped violently against the hardwood.

“Luca, this is insane! She is a confused, bitter old woman!”

Luca raised a hand, silencing her without a single word.

He looked back at Rosa.

“Vincent hid the baby?”

“He adopted her out,” Rosa said, tears finally spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. “To a distant cousin in Italy. He paid them to raise her, pretending she was a true-born Bellini.”

The room seemed to tilt.

I looked at Vanessa.

The elegant, untouchable socialite was clutching her red satin gown, her knuckles white, her chest heaving.

“The baby in the photograph,” Luca said slowly, piecing it together.

Rosa nodded.

“It’s Vanessa.”

A collective gasp swept through the twenty-eight guests at the table.

Vanessa wasn’t a mafia princess.

She was the illegitimate daughter of a servant.

“Lies!” Vanessa shrieked. The polished mask completely shattered. “My father is Vincent Bellini! We built this city! We made you who you are, Luca!”

“You lied to me,” Luca said, his voice dropping an octave. “Your father promised me an alliance by blood. But you aren't his legitimate heir. You have no claim to the Bellini empire.”

Vanessa’s eyes darted toward the doors.

She was calculating. Desperate.

“Luca, please,” she said, suddenly changing her tone. Her voice became high, pleading. “My father forced me to keep the secret. If anyone found out, he would have cut me off. I did this for us.”

“You locked Rosa in a room to protect us?”

“I had to silence her!” Vanessa cried.

Then she realized what she had just admitted.

Luca’s expression turned to ice.

“Get out of my house.”

Vanessa blinked. “What?”

“The engagement is over,” Luca said. “Take your things and leave.”

“You can’t do this to me!” she screamed, lunging across the table.

She reached for the wooden box in Luca’s hands.

She didn't want the photograph.

She wanted the folded letter sitting beneath it.

Luca pulled the box back, but Vanessa’s hand clipped his wrist.

The silver pocket watch inside the box tumbled out.

It hit the marble floor with a heavy crack.

The impact popped the back casing off the watch.

Vanessa froze.

So did Luca.

Because hidden inside the casing of the antique watch wasn't gears or springs.

It was a small, tightly folded blue train ticket.

Rosa gasped, pressing her hands to her mouth.

“I didn't know,” Rosa whispered. “Antonio said he hid the proof, but I didn't know where.”

Luca slowly bent down and picked up the blue ticket.

He unfolded it.

He read the destination.

Then he looked at Vanessa, and a terrifying realization crossed his face.

May you like

“Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice barely a whisper. “Where were you on the night my father died?”
