Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

The fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across the library walls.

I covered my mouth with both hands to stifle a gasp.

Leo was alive.

But he wasn't a hostage. He was working for Vincent Bellini.

Luca didn't flinch at the gun pointed at his chest.

He just stared at the young man, his dark eyes filled with a heartbreaking mixture of shock and grief.

“Leo,” Luca said softly. “He lied to you. He took you from our mother.”

Leo’s hand remained perfectly steady. His face was a mask of cold indifference.

“My mother was a junkie who left me in a dumpster, Moretti,” Leo said, his voice laced with bitter anger. “Vincent saved me. He raised me.”

“That’s a lie!” Luca took a half-step forward. “Your mother was Elena Moretti. She died bringing you into this world. I have the proof.”

Vincent chuckled, a dry, rattling sound.

“Proof?” Vincent patted the wooden box in his lap. “You mean this box of old trinkets? I read the letter, Luca. It’s the desperate fiction of a dying man. Your father was insane at the end.”

“Where is Rosa?” Luca demanded, his voice echoing in the large room.

“The old woman is locked in the cellar,” Vincent said dismissively. “She’ll be dealt with. But first, we have to deal with you.”

Vincent leaned forward, resting his hands on his cane.

“You embarrassed my daughter tonight, Luca. You broke a promise to my family. That requires payment.”

“I’ll give you whatever you want, Vincent,” Luca said. “Money. Territories. The port contracts. Take them. Just let Leo go.”

Leo scoffed. “I don't need you to buy my freedom. I’m the heir to the Bellini family.”

“No, you’re not,” a voice rang out.

It took me a second to realize the voice was mine.

I stepped out from the shadows of the hallway and walked into the library.

Every gun in the room immediately swung toward me.

Luca’s face went pale. “Emma, get out of here!”

I ignored him. My legs felt like they were made of lead, but I kept walking until I stood beside Luca.

I looked directly at Vincent Bellini.

“Vanessa is your heir,” I said, my voice trembling but loud. “And she’s not even your real daughter.”

Vincent’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

Leo looked at Vincent, confused. “What is the maid talking about?”

“She’s lying,” Vincent snapped. “Shoot her, Leo.”

Leo hesitated.

I reached into my pocket.

My fingers closed around the silver charm bracelet Luca had given me at the train station.

I pulled it out and held it up by the chain. It caught the firelight, the tiny silver bear swinging back and forth.

“Your mother didn't leave you in a dumpster, Leo,” I said, looking right at the boy. “She wore this bracelet to the hospital the night you were born. The night she died.”

Leo’s eyes locked onto the silver bear.

His breath hitched.

He reached his free hand into his shirt and pulled out a silver chain from around his neck.

Hanging on the end of his chain was an identical silver bear.

The guns in the room wavered.

“Vincent told me this bear was the only thing I had from the orphanage,” Leo whispered, his voice suddenly sounding very young and very lost.

“Vincent is the one who put you there,” Luca said gently. “He killed our father to keep it a secret.”

Leo slowly lowered his gun, turning his head to look at the old mafia boss.

“Is it true?” Leo asked.

Vincent’s face twisted in rage.

He didn't answer Leo. Instead, he looked at his armed guards.

“Kill them both,” Vincent ordered. “And the girl.”

The guards raised their weapons.

But before they could fire, the heavy library doors crashed open behind them.

It wasn't more of Vincent’s men.

It was Vanessa.

Her red satin dress was torn at the hem, her hair wild and soaked from the rain. In her hands, she held a heavy, iron fireplace poker.

She didn't look at Luca.

She didn't look at me.

May you like

She marched straight toward Vincent Bellini, raised the iron poker, and smashed it across the back of her father’s knees.
