Chapter 2 - The Name On The Bracelet

Every person in the hallway turned toward the woman in the red dress.

And Luca’s fiancée quietly backed into the wall.

The silence in the corridor was absolute.

It was the kind of heavy, suffocating quiet that only happens when a lie that has survived for decades finally shatters against the floor.

Luca stared at the young woman he had planned to marry.

“Your name is Vanessa,” he whispered.

She pressed her spine against the wallpaper, her hands trembling.

Then the doctor in the white coat—the real Elena—took a step forward.

Her eyes were locked on the young woman.

“You’re my daughter,” Elena said.

The words hit the air like a physical blow.

Caroline gasped, clutching her brother’s arm.

Nicholas went rigid.

I stood by the elevator doors, my nurse’s instincts kicking into overdrive as I watched the blood drain from Luca’s face. His heart rate was already compromised. This kind of shock could put him back in the ICU.

“Explain,” Luca demanded, his voice dangerously low.

He looked at Elena, the doctor.

“You’re telling me the woman I grieved for eight years... the mother of my children... was your sister?”

“Yes,” Elena said. Her voice was steady, but her hands were clenched tight in her pockets. “Vanessa and I were identical. But she was the one who loved the thrill. She was the one who met you.”

Luca shook his head, rejecting it.

“She knew my whole life. She raised Caroline and Nicholas.”

“Because she stole my life to do it,” Elena replied sharply. “When she found out how wealthy the Moretti family was, she didn’t want to be Vanessa the struggling nurse anymore. She took my credentials. My name. And when she faked her death eight years ago to escape your father’s crosshairs, she left you completely blind to who she really was.”

Luca swayed on his feet.

I stepped forward, grabbing his elbow. “Sit down, Luca. Now.”

He ignored me, pulling his arm away.

He turned his burning gaze back to the young woman in the red dress. The fiancée.

“If she is your daughter,” Luca said to the doctor, pointing at the younger Vanessa, “then why the hell is she engaged to me?”

Young Vanessa’s facade finally broke.

Tears spilled over her mascara.

“Because I wanted to destroy you,” she cried out.

The corridor echoed with the confession.

“My mother,” young Vanessa pointed a shaking finger at Elena, “abandoned me when I was a baby. She disappeared into this facility. I grew up in foster care. I grew up with nothing.”

She wiped her face angrily.

“Then I found out my aunt married a mafia boss. I thought you were the reason my family was broken. I thought you killed her. So I took my aunt’s real name. I engineered our meeting at that charity gala. I made you fall in love with me so I could take everything from you.”

She pointed at the torn discharge papers on the floor.

“I was going to lock you in this facility and strip your accounts dry.”

Caroline lunged forward.

“You bitch!”

Nicholas caught his sister around the waist, pulling her back. “Caroline, stop!”

“She’s not the villain here,” a frail voice echoed down the hall.

We all turned.

Matteo, sitting in his wheelchair, was shaking his head.

“Vanessa didn’t plan this alone,” Matteo said softly. “She was manipulated. Just like the rest of us.”

Luca looked at his brother. “By who?”

Before Matteo could answer, Dr. Warren stepped out from the shadows of the nurse’s station.

He looked entirely broken.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy object.

Silver beads. A silver cross.

A rosary.

Luca’s breath hitched.

“That’s my father’s,” Luca whispered.

“Yes,” Warren said, his voice trembling. “Salvatore didn’t die, Luca. And he didn’t just hide. He’s been pulling the strings this entire time.”

Warren held the rosary out.

“And he wants to see you.”

Answer one.

Open two.

I didn’t care about mafia politics. But I cared about my patient.

I stepped between Luca and Dr. Warren.

“My patient isn’t going anywhere until I check his vitals,” I said firmly.

Dr. Warren looked at me with hollow eyes.

“You don’t understand, Ms. Parker. Salvatore isn’t a threat anymore. He’s a prisoner. And the person keeping him locked up is the same person who just locked the exits to this floor.”

The heavy steel doors at the end of the corridor suddenly slammed shut with a deafening metallic clang.

The electronic keypads glowed red.

We were trapped.

And Francesca Moretti was standing on the other side of the glass.
