Chapter 11 - The Necklace In The Box

Luca pulled a small, flat velvet box from his pocket.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I had watched enough movies to know what a velvet box usually meant.

“Luca, we barely know each other,” I stammered, my cheeks flushing hot.

He laughed softly, a rich, genuine sound that completely eased the tension.

“It’s not a ring, Sarah. I’m an old-fashioned man, but I’m not crazy.”

He opened the box.

Resting on black velvet was a delicate, vintage gold necklace. The pendant was a small, intricately carved compass.

“This belonged to my grandmother,” Luca explained, his voice dropping to a reverent whisper. “She wore it when she immigrated from Italy. She used to tell me that a compass doesn’t tell you how hard the journey will be, it just reminds you of true north.”

He looked up at me.

“When I was lost in that fog of medication and grief, you were my true north, Sarah. You didn’t care about my money or my reputation. You just cared about the truth.”

Tears prickled the corners of my eyes.

“I want you to run the foundation,” Luca said. “But more than that... I want you to stay in my life. As an equal. As a partner. If you’ll have me.”

I looked at the beautiful, simple compass.

It wasn’t a diamond bought to show off wealth. It was a piece of family history offered as a profound gesture of respect.

“I don’t know anything about high society, Luca,” I warned him, wiping a rogue tear from my cheek. “I buy my coffee at the gas station and my idea of a fancy dinner is extra cheese on a pizza.”

“I happen to love extra cheese,” he smiled.

I took a deep breath.

I had spent my entire adult life taking care of other people. My patients, my ex-husband, my mother. I had never taken a leap just for myself.

I looked into Luca’s dark, steady eyes.

“Put it on me,” I whispered.

Luca’s smile reached his eyes. He gently lifted the delicate gold chain from the box, stepped behind me, and fastened the clasp at the nape of my neck. His fingers were warm against my skin.

“Perfect,” he murmured, stepping back.

I touched the small gold compass resting against my collarbone. It felt right.

“Now,” Luca said, his tone shifting back to business. “If you’re going to be the director of my foundation, your first official duty is tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM.”

“What’s happening at 8:00 AM?”

“We are going to O’Hare International Airport,” Luca said, a spark of defiance lighting up his face.

“I thought you said you promised Elena you wouldn’t stop her from leaving?”

May you like

“I did,” Luca smirked. “But you didn’t.”
