Chapter 5 - The Hidden Memory Drive In The Snow

I froze.
Victor’s head snapped toward me. “What is he talking about? You said she had the ring!”
Luca’s eyes darted to me. He hadn't known about the pen’s secret either.
“Open it, Emma!” Vittorio yelled, defying the gun against his head.
My trembling hands pulled the blue fountain pen from my pocket.
Victor’s eyes widened. “You lied to me, Luca!”
He swung his weapon away from Vittorio, aiming it straight at my chest.
“Drop it!” Victor screamed.
“Get down!” Luca roared, diving in front of me.
BANG.
The gunshot deafened me.
Luca tackled me into the snow just as the bullet shattered the side mirror of a rusted train car behind us.
I hit the icy ground hard.
Luca rolled, bringing his own pistol up in a single, fluid motion, and fired twice.
BANG. BANG.
Victor screamed in pain, dropping his gun as a bullet tore through his shoulder. He staggered backward, clutching his arm, and fell against the hood of the white van.
“Dad! Get down!” Luca yelled, keeping his gun trained on Victor.
Vittorio crawled behind the thick metal tire of the van, shielding himself from the crossfire.
I sat up in the snow, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Luca stood up slowly, never lowering his weapon. He kicked Victor’s gun away into the darkness.
“It’s over, Victor,” Luca said, his voice devoid of any mercy.
Victor slid down the hood of the van, leaving a streak of blood on the white paint. He laughed, a wet, hacking sound.
“It’s not over,” Victor gasped. “Vanessa is already on the plane. She has the account numbers. She’s going to bleed your legitimate businesses dry, Luca.”
Luca ignored him. He rushed to his father, helping the older man up from the snow.
“Are you hurt?” Luca asked, frantically checking his father for wounds.
“I’m fine, my son,” Vittorio breathed, leaning heavily on Luca’s arm. “I’m fine.”
Vittorio looked over Luca’s shoulder at me.
I was still sitting in the snow, clutching the blue pen.
“Emma,” Vittorio said softly. “The cap.”
I looked down at the beautiful blue lacquer pen. My hands were shaking uncontrollably, but I gripped the gold trim of the cap and twisted it counter-clockwise.
It clicked.
The top half of the pen didn't reveal a nib or an ink cartridge.
It popped open, revealing a tiny, hidden USB micro-drive embedded in the metal.
Victor saw it from the ground and cursed loudly in Italian.
“What is that?” Luca asked, staring at the drive.
“It’s the master ledger,” Vittorio said, his voice strengthening. “The real one. It contains every transaction Victor and Vanessa made for the last three years. The fake shell companies, the offshore accounts, the bribes. Everything.”
I looked at the old man in awe.
“You knew,” I whispered.
Vittorio nodded slowly. “I’ve known Vanessa was spying on us for months. I hired private investigators. But I needed proof before I could bring it to the syndicate council. I stored the data on that drive.”
He looked at Luca.
“That’s why she was trying to force me into the nursing home,” Vittorio explained. “She realized I was close to exposing her. She needed me declared legally incompetent so the council wouldn't believe my testimony.”
Luca’s jaw tightened. The ultimate betrayal.
“And when I wouldn't sign,” Vittorio continued, looking at me with deep gratitude, “she panicked. She tried to take the legal folder from me by force. But you stopped her, Emma. You caught me. And in the struggle, I slipped the pen under the chair.”
He gave me a weak, proud smile.
“I knew you would find it. You’re the most meticulous person in that house.”
Tears pricked my eyes.
I stood up, dusting the snow from my coat, and handed the pen to Luca.
Luca looked at the micro-drive, then down at Victor bleeding in the snow.
“Vanessa is on flight 842,” Victor taunted weakly. “You can’t stop her now. Once she lands in Zurich, she’s untouchable.”
Luca pulled his phone from his pocket.
He didn't call the police.
He called the control tower at Midway Airport.
“This is Luca Moretti,” he said, his voice carrying the absolute authority of his empire. “Flight 842 to Zurich. Ground it.”
A pause.
“I don’t care if it’s taxiing to the runway. I own the leasing company that provides their jet fuel. If that plane takes off, you will never service another private charter in Chicago again.”
He hung up.
He looked down at Victor.
“She’s not going to Zurich,” Luca said coldly. “She’s going to federal prison.”
Sirens wailed in the distance. Daniel had tracked Luca’s GPS and called the authorities.
The nightmare was ending.
Luca turned to me in the swirling snow.
His dark eyes held an emotion I had never seen in him before.
He reached out, his warm, bare hand gently touching the side of my freezing cheek.
“Are you okay?” he whispered.
I nodded, unable to speak.
May you like
“You saved him, Emma,” Luca said softly, his thumb brushing away a snowflake from my jaw. “You saved our family.”
