Chapter 7 - The Study Doors Close At Eight

The rest of Christmas Day passed in a blur of warmth and surreal joy.

For the first time since I had started working at the estate, I was forbidden from lifting a finger. Sofia insisted I sit with them for lunch. Vittorio told stories about his youth in Italy that made the entire table roar with laughter.

But every time I looked down the table, Luca’s eyes were already on me.

Dark. Patient. Burning.

By 7:45 PM, the house had quieted down. The relatives had gone home. Vittorio had retired to his room, completely exhausted but safe.

I stood in my small staff bedroom, staring at myself in the mirror.

I had taken off the black uniform.

I was wearing a simple, dark green velvet dress I had bought years ago for a holiday party. It was modest, but it brought out the color of my eyes.

The silver cuff gleamed on my wrist.

My heart was beating so fast I could feel it in my throat.

At exactly 8:00 PM, I walked down the silent, carpeted hallway of the east wing.

I stopped in front of the heavy oak doors of Luca’s private study.

I had cleaned this room dozens of times. I had dusted the mahogany bookshelves and polished the leather chairs. But I had never been invited inside as a guest.

I raised my hand and knocked softly.

“Come in.”

His voice was deep, resonating through the wood.

I turned the brass handle and stepped inside.

The study was bathed in the warm, golden light of a crackling fire. Snow continued to fall outside the massive windows, cocooning the room in winter silence.

Luca was standing by the antique globe, pouring two glasses of amber liquid from a crystal decanter.

He turned around.

He stopped pouring.

He stared at me, his eyes sweeping from the hem of my green dress to the silver bracelet, and finally up to my face.

He set the crystal decanter down with a soft clink.

“You look breathtaking,” Luca murmured, walking toward me.

“Thank you,” I breathed, suddenly feeling incredibly shy.

He handed me a glass of amaretto. His fingers brushed against mine, sending a jolt of electricity straight up my arm.

“To new beginnings,” Luca said softly, raising his glass.

“To new beginnings,” I echoed.

We drank. The liquid was warm and sweet, settling my nerves.

Luca took the glass from my hand and set both of them on his desk.

He didn't step back.

He stayed exactly where he was, standing so close I could smell the sharp, clean scent of bergamot and cedar on his skin.

“I meant what I said this morning, Emma,” Luca said, his voice dropping lower. “About watching you for fourteen months.”

I looked up into his dark, intense eyes.

“I thought you never noticed me,” I admitted quietly. “You were always so focused. So intimidating.”

Luca gave a short, self-deprecating laugh.

“I was intimidated by you,” he confessed.

My eyes widened. “The head of the Moretti syndicate was intimidated by a maid?”

“You weren't just a maid,” Luca said, his expression turning entirely serious. “You were the only person in this house who wasn't afraid to look me in the eye. You were the only one who didn't flinch when I was angry. You walked through this world with a quiet strength that terrified me, because I knew I was unworthy of it.”

He reached out, his hand gently resting on my waist.

“And then Vanessa came along,” Luca continued, his voice tightening with disgust. “A business arrangement. A merger my father’s capos wanted. I agreed to it because I thought I was dead inside. I thought a loveless marriage to a ruthless woman was exactly what I deserved.”

He stepped closer, eliminating the space between us.

“But every time you poured my coffee,” Luca whispered, “every time you smiled at my father… I realized I didn't want the dark. I wanted the light.”

My breath caught.

“Luca…”

“I’m terrified of ruining you, Emma,” Luca confessed, his forehead resting gently against mine. “But I’m too selfish to let you go.”

I closed my eyes, leaning into his warmth.

I raised my hand, the cool silver of his grandmother’s bracelet resting against the nape of his neck.

“You aren't ruining me,” I whispered.

Luca didn't need another invitation.

His mouth found mine.

The kiss was desperate, consuming, and years in the making. It held the terror of the night before, the relief of the morning, and the undeniable, scorching heat of a man who had finally found the one thing he was willing to burn the world down for.

His arms wrapped tightly around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest. I buried my hands in his dark hair, kissing him back with an intensity that surprised me.

When we finally broke apart, we were both breathless.

Luca rested his cheek against my hair, holding me tightly against his racing heart.

May you like

“Stay with me,” he whispered into the quiet room.
