Chapter 7 - The Grandfather’s Final Lie

I stared at the photograph under the flickering yellow streetlamp.

Vanessa and Carlo.

They looked so happy.

He is mine.

Carlo wasn’t just Antonio’s old head of security.

He was Vanessa’s real father.

Which meant Marco wasn’t her brother.

And Leo wasn’t just a Valenti heir.

My mind raced, piecing together the fractured lies they had fed Luca inside the house.

If Carlo was Vanessa’s father, then this whole thing was a setup.

Vanessa hadn't brought the boy to the mansion for protection.

She brought him there as bait.

They were handing Luca over to the Valentis.

I looked back at the sprawling Moretti estate.

The iron gates were still open.

The black SUVs sat idling in the driveway.

Luca was inside, standing in the dining room with a detonator, waiting for men who were already being led upstairs by his own fiancé.

I had to warn him.

I shoved the photograph back into my apron and sprinted toward the house.

I didn't go through the shattered front doors.

I ran around the side of the mansion, toward the kitchen gardens, where the staff entrance was hidden behind heavy ivy.

I punched in the keypad code.

Green light.

I slipped inside.

The kitchen was dark and completely silent.

I crept down the hallway toward the grand dining room.

Through the crack in the double doors, I saw Luca.

He was standing alone at the head of the long mahogany table, the dark suit draped over a chair nearby.

He was perfectly calm, holding the onyx button.

But there were no Valenti hitmen in the room.

Suddenly, a voice echoed from the balcony above the dining room.

“You always were too noble for your own good, Luciano.”

Luca looked up.

I peeked through the door.

Standing on the interior balcony, looking down at Luca, was Carlo.

And standing right beside him was Vanessa.

She wasn't crying anymore.

Her face was cold, hard, and completely unapologetic.

Beside her, holding her hand, was little Leo.

“Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice deadly quiet. “What is this?”

“Survival,” Vanessa said flatly.

Carlo rested his hands on his cane.

“I told you Antonio built a trap, Luca. I just didn't tell you who it was for.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“You set me up.”

“Antonio set you up,” Carlo corrected. “When he died, he left the family in ruins. He made deals with the Valentis to spare your life, but the price was giving them control of the city. I spent thirteen years pretending to be dead, orchestrating a way to take it back.”

“By selling me out?”

“By offering them the one thing they wanted more than the city,” Carlo said. “Revenge on the last Moretti.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“And you played along? After I gave you a home? A ring?”

Vanessa touched the diamond on her finger, then slowly slid it off.

She dropped it over the balcony.

It hit the marble floor with a sharp ping.

“I did what I had to do to protect my son,” she said. “The Valentis promised that if I delivered you tonight, Leo would be safe. They would recognize him as the rightful heir, and spare his life.”

“You trust them?” Luca sneered.

“I trust my father,” she said, looking at Carlo.

Luca slowly raised the onyx button.

“You forgot one thing, Carlo. I have the detonator. The dining room walls are lined with explosives.”

Carlo laughed.

It was a dry, hollow sound.

“Oh, Luciano. Did you really think Antonio would build a bomb into his own house?”

Luca froze.

“Press the button,” Carlo challenged.

Luca hesitated, then pressed down hard on the red microchip.

Nothing blew up.

There was no explosion.

Instead, a loud, heavy clank echoed through the walls.

Steel shutters slammed down over the dining room windows.

Heavy iron bars dropped across the doorways.

I barely pulled my face back in time before a steel grate slammed down over the kitchen doors, trapping Luca inside the dining room.

He was caged.

“It’s not a bomb,” Carlo smiled from the balcony. “It’s a vault. And you just locked yourself inside it.”

Footsteps echoed from the grand foyer.

The scarred Valenti hitman walked into the room, followed by his men.

They looked up at Carlo.

“Is it done?” the hitman asked.

“He is secured,” Carlo said.

The hitman smiled.

He raised his gun and pointed it directly at Vanessa.

“Good. Now kill the woman and the boy.”
