Chapter 9 - The Code In The Sleeve

We didn't hesitate.

Marco took the lead, limping heavily but keeping the fire extinguisher raised.

I held Leo’s hand, and Vanessa followed closely behind us.

We slipped out of the master suite and crept down the hallway, avoiding the bloodstained balcony where Carlo had stood.

We reached the billiard room.

The door was still open.

We rushed inside and pushed through the heavy blue door into Antonio’s hidden office.

The room was exactly as we had left it.

Dusty, quiet, untouched by the chaos outside.

“Look for a hatch!” Marco hissed, dropping to his knees. “A vent, a floorboard, anything!”

Vanessa and I tore the heavy Persian rug back.

Nothing but solid oak floorboards.

I ran to the heavy oak desk and started pulling drawers open.

Empty. Empty.

“There’s nothing here!” Vanessa panicked.

Leo let go of my hand.

He walked over to the velvet curtain that had covered the safe.

He pointed to a small, brass speaking tube set into the wall, the kind used in old Victorian mansions to communicate with the kitchen.

I ran to it and popped the cap off.

“Luca?” I whispered into the brass pipe.

A second later, his voice crackled through.

“Emma. Thank God. Are you safe?”

“Yes! Marco is with us, and Vanessa, and Leo.”

I heard Luca exhale deeply through the tube.

“Listen to me,” Luca said, his voice urgent. “The men are trying to cut through the steel grate with a blowtorch. They’ll be through in ten minutes. I can't get out.”

“Vanessa says there’s an override code!” I shouted down the tube. “It’s stitched into the right sleeve of your father’s jacket! The one on the chair!”

There was a long pause.

I heard rustling fabric through the pipe.

“I found it,” Luca said. “It’s five numbers. 4-8-1-5-9.”

“Where do I enter it?”

“Under the desk,” Luca said. “There’s a false panel near the floor. Open it.”

I dove under the heavy oak desk.

I felt along the wooden paneling until my fingers caught a tiny groove.

I pulled hard.

A small wooden door snapped open, revealing a dusty keypad.

My fingers trembled as I punched in the numbers.

4-8-1-5-9.

A loud, hydraulic hiss echoed beneath us.

Down in the dining room, the heavy steel grates began to rise.

“It’s open!” Luca’s voice echoed from below, no longer coming through the tube, but ringing out in the grand hall.

We ran out of the blue room and looked over the upstairs balcony.

Luca was stepping out of the dining room.

He had picked up Rossi’s dropped gun.

The remaining Valenti men turned in surprise as the steel cage lifted, but Luca didn't give them a chance.

Three shots rang out.

Precise. Lethal.

The threat was over.

The mansion went dead silent, save for the faint ringing in my ears.

Luca walked slowly up the grand staircase.

His tuxedo was ruined, covered in dust and plaster.

He reached the top of the stairs and looked at us.

Marco dropped the fire extinguisher and slid down the wall in exhaustion.

Vanessa was weeping softly, holding Leo tightly against her chest.

Luca stopped in front of her.

He looked at the woman he was supposed to marry tonight.

“You betrayed me, Vanessa.”

She didn't look up.

“I know.”

“You used my house to hide your mess. You put my people in danger.”

“I know.”

Luca looked at the little boy.

Leo wasn't crying anymore. He stepped forward and wrapped his small arms around Luca’s leg, burying his face in Luca’s dusty trousers.

Luca’s expression softened.

He gently rested a hand on the boy’s dark curls.

“The engagement is over,” Luca said softly to Vanessa. “You will pack your things tonight.”

Vanessa nodded, tears dripping onto the floor.

“I understand.”

“But,” Luca continued, his voice steady. “You will not leave Chicago. I am putting you in a secure apartment downtown under my family’s protection. The Valentis will never touch you or this boy again.”

Vanessa gasped, finally looking up at him.

“Why?”

“Because my father promised to protect the innocent,” Luca said. “And I am not my father’s mistakes.”

He looked at Marco.

“Get her out of here. My men will escort you.”

Marco nodded respectfully.

As they walked away, little Leo stopped and turned back to me.

He raised his hands and signed:

Thank you.

I smiled through my tears and signed back:

You are safe now.

Luca and I stood alone in the ruined hallway.

The main conflict was over. The house was a disaster, but we had survived.

Then, a weak voice drifted from the far end of the balcony.

“Luciano.”

We both turned.

Carlo was sitting slumped against the wall, clutching his bleeding chest.

He had dragged himself out of the line of fire.

He was dying, but he was smiling.

Luca rushed over and knelt beside the old man.

“Carlo. Hold on, the ambulance is coming.”

Carlo shook his head.

“No need, son. I did what I stayed alive to do. My daughter is free.”

He looked up at me.

“Emma.”

I knelt beside him.

“Yes, Carlo?”

With trembling, bloodstained fingers, he reached into his vest pocket.

He pulled out a small, sealed envelope.

“I didn't bring the suit just for Luca,” he whispered, pressing the envelope into my hand.

“What is this?” I asked.

Carlo smiled weakly.

May you like

“Answer one, open two. Open it, Emma.”
