Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN IN THE SHADOWS

The revelation hit like a physical blow.

Dante immediately called Marco, who was waiting by the cars.

"Lock down the perimeter," Dante ordered, his mafia instincts flaring back to life. "Check the cameras at the gates. Someone left this here today."

Within twenty minutes, Marco sent a still frame from the cemetery's security footage to Dante’s phone.

It showed a tall, elegant woman in a black trench coat, her face obscured by a wide-brimmed hat, walking away from Pietro’s grave.

"We have an address," Marco's voice came through the speaker. "The plates on her car trace back to an estate on the north shore. Held under a shell corporation."

"Take Leo home to my mother," Dante told Marco. "Nora and I are going for a ride."

The drive to the north shore was tense and silent.

Dante gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white.

"If Elena Marcello is alive," I asked quietly, "what does she want?"

"I don't know," Dante admitted. "But if she knew your grandfather, she knows the whole truth."

We pulled up to a massive, secluded cliffside mansion overlooking the ocean.

The gates were wide open. There were no guards.

It was an invitation.

Dante and I walked into the grand foyer.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the waves crash against the rocks, was the woman from the footage.

She turned around.

She was older, her dark hair streaked with silver, but she possessed a terrifying, regal beauty.

"Dante," the woman said smoothly. "You have your father's eyes. It’s tragic."

Dante stood protectively in front of me. "Elena Marcello. You're supposed to be dead."

"Salvatore tried very hard to make that happen," Elena smiled a thin, cold smile.

She looked at me.

"And you must be Nora. You look exactly like your mother."

I stepped out from behind Dante. "You knew my mother?"

Elena walked toward a small mahogany table and picked up a framed photograph.

She handed it to me.

It was a picture of my mother, laughing, holding a tiny baby—me.

And standing next to my mother, smiling warmly, was Elena Marcello.

"Your mother was my best friend," Elena said softly. "When Salvatore found out my family had leverage on him, he didn't just order the hit on your parents because your father was an informant. He killed them to punish me."

Tears welled in my eyes.

"Pietro stole the ledger for me," Elena continued. "He hid it to ensure Salvatore couldn't use it to destroy the Marcellos completely. Pietro was protecting us."

She looked at Dante.

"I stayed dead for thirty years to keep the peace. But when I saw the news... when I saw you had dismantled Salvatore's empire to save Nora..."

Elena reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a massive, heavy gold ring adorned with a black onyx stone.

"The Marcello family ring," Dante breathed.

"My family is broken, Dante," Elena said, holding the ring out to him. "Salvatore is in prison. The war is over. Take this. Unite the territories. Legitimate the businesses. Be the king your father never was."
