Chapter 10 - THE GRAVE AND THE SILVER BRACELET

Three months later, the autumn leaves were turning gold and red.

The nightmare felt like a distant memory.

Dante and I walked hand-in-hand through the quiet, peaceful cemetery on the edge of the city.

Leo ran ahead of us, carrying a small bouquet of white lilies.

Dante had kept his promise. We lived in a beautiful house in the suburbs. Leo had a massive bedroom painted bright blue, and he had finally stopped waking up with nightmares about the fire.

We reached my grandfather’s grave.

Thanks to Dante, Pietro Rossi no longer rested in an unmarked pauper’s grave. He had a beautiful marble headstone that read: Pietro Rossi. A Brave Sparrow. A Loving Grandfather.

Leo carefully placed the lilies on the grass.

"We miss you, Grandpa," Leo said brightly. "Dante taught me how to throw a baseball yesterday. I broke a window."

Dante chuckled, squeezing my hand. "We don't need to tell him everything, buddy."

I smiled, leaning my head against Dante’s shoulder.

But as I looked down at the marble headstone, something caught my eye.

Resting carefully on the top edge of the stone, half-hidden by a fallen red leaf, was a piece of jewelry.

I stepped forward and picked it up.

It was a heavy, tarnished silver bracelet.

Engraved on the inside were the initials: E. M.

Dante froze. The relaxed, happy expression completely vanished from his face.

He stared at the bracelet in my hand like he had seen a ghost.

"Dante?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat. "What is it?"

He slowly reached out and took the silver chain. His fingers trembled.

"E.M.," Dante whispered, his voice incredibly hollow. "Elena Marcello."

I gasped. "The Marcello family?"

Dante looked around the empty, quiet cemetery. The wind rustled the dead leaves, carrying a sudden chill.

"Elena Marcello was the daughter of the rival boss," Dante said, his eyes locking onto mine with absolute terror. "She was my father's greatest enemy."

"Why would she leave her bracelet on my grandfather's grave?"

Dante swallowed hard.

May you like

"Because she didn't die in the mafia war thirty years ago like my father claimed," Dante breathed, staring at the silver metal. "She's alive. And she knew Pietro."
