Chapter 5 - THE SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX IN THE RAIN

The numbers burned themselves into my memory.

4-7-2-9-1.

I didn't sleep that night. I sat in the velvet armchair by the window, watching the rain lash against the bulletproof glass of the Gallo estate, clutching the faded theater ticket.

My grandfather had left this for me. Not for Dante. Not for Salvatore.

At 6:00 AM, the bedroom door opened quietly.

Dante walked in. He had changed into a dark sweater and slacks, looking less like a mafia boss and more like the exhausted man who sometimes lingered at table twelve.

He saw me awake. He saw the ticket in my hand.

He didn't look surprised.

"He slipped it into my pocket the day we met in the park, right before he died," Dante said quietly, walking toward the window. "He told me he had hidden the combination on me, and that when you were ready, you would find it."

"Why me?" I asked, my voice hoarse. "Why didn't he just give you the ledger?"

"Because the ledger is power, Nora. He wanted you to hold the cards. He wanted to make sure my family could never dispose of you once we got what we wanted."

I stood up, the ticket trembling in my grip.

"Where is it?"

"A private vault downtown. Held under his name. Only blood can access it." Dante held out his hand. "I’ll take you."

I looked at the sleeping boy on the bed. "And Leo?"

"My mother is watching him," Dante promised. "He is safer here than anywhere else in the world."

I nodded.

An hour later, we were standing inside a sterile, high-security bank vault beneath the city streets.

The bank manager had left us alone in the steel-lined room.

I walked up to box number 814.

My hands shook as I dialed the numbers on the brass lock.

4-7-2-9-1.

The heavy metal door clicked open.

Inside was a single, leather-bound black book.

I pulled it out. It was heavy, smelling of dust and old paper.

Dante stepped closer, his presence warm and solid behind me.

"Open it," he said softly.

I flipped the heavy cover open.

My eyes scanned the first page. It was written entirely in Italian. Names, dates, amounts of money.

But it wasn't a list of bribes or hits committed by the Marcello family.

I stopped breathing.

The handwriting wasn't the Marcellos'.

It was Salvatore Gallo's handwriting.

I flipped the page. More names. More dates.

Then, my heart completely stopped.

I stared at a line dated twenty-four years ago.

Hit confirmed. Target: Maria and Thomas Rossi. Payment: $50,000.

My parents.

The parents I was told died in a tragic car accident when I was two years old.

I felt the floor drop out from beneath me.

"Nora?" Dante asked, stepping forward to catch my arm as my knees buckled.

I violently shoved him away.

"Don't touch me!" I screamed, the sound echoing off the steel walls.

Dante froze, completely bewildered. "What's wrong?"

I threw the ledger at his chest.

"My grandfather didn't steal leverage against your father to protect him!" I sobbed, the betrayal tearing me apart. "He stole your father's own ledger to survive!"

Dante caught the book. He looked down at the open page.

He read the names. Maria and Thomas Rossi.

The color completely drained from Dante's face.

May you like

"Salvatore didn't owe my grandfather," I whispered, backing away in pure terror. "Your father ordered the murder of my parents."
