Chapter 9 - THE END OF THE OLD KING

By midnight, Salvatore Gallo’s empire had completely collapsed.

The federal judge Rosa called hadn't hesitated. The ledger was the holy grail of organized crime evidence. Within hours, the FBI raided the Gallo estate, the private clubs, and the shipping docks.

They arrested Salvatore at his desk, surrounded by his terrified bodyguards.

The old king was dragged out in handcuffs, his silver cane left forgotten on the floor.

Two days later, I stood in the immaculate, sunlit hospital room.

Dante was sitting up in bed, looking pale but remarkably strong. The doctors said the bullet had missed his lung by a fraction of an inch.

Leo was sitting at the foot of Dante’s bed, playing with a deck of cards Marco had bought him.

"You cheated," Dante accused the six-year-old, a small smile playing on his lips.

"Did not," Leo grinned wildly. "You're just slow because you got shot."

I laughed, a genuine, weightless sound.

It felt like the first time I had breathed freely in my entire life.

The truth about my parents had been made public. Pietro Rossi was officially exonerated, hailed in the press as a heroic informant who tried to bring down a mafia boss. My grandfather’s name was finally clean.

Dante had handed over the legal, legitimate businesses to his mother, cutting all ties to the criminal underworld his father had built.

Dante looked up at me from the bed.

"Come here," he said softly.

I walked over. He reached out with his good arm and pulled me down to sit beside him.

"The charges against my father are ironclad," Dante murmured, his thumb brushing my cheek. "He will never see the outside of a prison cell. And the Marcellos struck a plea deal to avoid the ledger's fallout. Nobody is hunting you anymore, Nora."

Tears filled my eyes, but they were happy tears.

"What happens now?" I asked.

Dante looked at Leo, who was happily building a card tower.

"Now," Dante said, his voice thick with emotion, "I buy a house with a huge backyard. I put Leo in the best school in the city. And I spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to carry a waitress tray again."

"I liked my tips," I joked, wiping my eyes.

"I'll tip you," Dante promised, pulling me down for a deep, lingering kiss. "Every single day."

For the first time since my grandfather died, I wasn't scared.

Leo was safe. My family's honor was restored. And the most dangerous man in the city had given up his crown just to hold my hand.
