Chapter 2 - The Silver Bracelet That Changed Everything

Vanessa stepped back, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.

The foyer was dead silent.

Luca didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t have to.

"I asked you a question, Vanessa. Why did you need the elevator to move with the doors open?"

She looked at the thirty guests watching her. Her perfect, manicured image was fracturing in real-time.

"Luca, you’re embarrassing me in front of our friends. This mechanic is obviously a scam artist. He’s trying to extort us."

The technician wiped oil from his palms onto a rag. He didn’t look scared of Vanessa anymore. He looked tired.

"Lady, I don't care about your friends. I just want the rest of my payment."

"I never paid you a dime!" Vanessa shrieked.

The man reached into his gray work jacket.

"You didn't give me cash. You gave me collateral. Said you'd trade it for money tomorrow."

He pulled something from his pocket and tossed it onto the silver tray a waiter had abandoned on the credenza.

It hit the metal with a heavy, distinct clink.

A heavy silver bracelet.

Tarnished in the grooves, engraved with a pattern of ivy leaves.

Vanessa’s face went completely bloodless.

Luca walked over to the tray. He stared down at the jewelry.

When he looked up, his dark eyes held an emotion I had never seen in him. It wasn’t anger. It was devastation.

"Where did you get this?" Luca asked her softly.

Vanessa’s voice shook. "It was... it was in the safe. I just borrowed it to—"

"This belonged to my mother," Luca interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. "It went missing three years ago. You told me it was lost during the move."

I stood perfectly still by the elevator. My heart hammered against my ribs.

I knew that bracelet.

Not because it belonged to Luca's mother.

But because my father had polished one exactly like it every Sunday at the kitchen table.

Vanessa swallowed hard. "Luca, please. I just needed to ensure the elevator stopped between floors. I wasn't going to hurt you! I just wanted to trap us inside."

Luca frowned. "Trap us?"

"To force you to talk to me!" she cried, tears spilling over her mascara. "You’ve been so distant! You’re always working. I thought if we were stuck, just the two of us, you'd finally look at me again."

It was a pathetic excuse.

But it made a twisted kind of sense for a woman desperate for control.

Until the technician spoke up again.

"Trap you?" He scoffed. "Buddy, she didn't pay me to stall the car."

Luca turned to him. "Explain."

"She paid me to bypass the interlock so the car would move with the doors open," the man said flatly. "And she told me to grease the threshold. Anyone stepping into that car wouldn't just trip. They’d slip straight down the open shaft."

The room collectively gasped.

Vanessa lunged forward. "He's lying! I never—"

Luca caught her wrist. The same way she had tried to grab mine.

"Who were you trying to kill, Vanessa?"

She sobbed, shaking her head. "Nobody! Luca, I swear!"

"She's telling the truth about that part," the technician muttered. "She didn't want to kill you, Mr. Moretti."

Luca didn't let go of Vanessa's wrist. "Then who?"

The man pointed a grease-stained finger across the room.

Directly at me.

May you like

"She wanted the housekeeper to take the bags down first."
