Chapter 9 - The Family Heirloom That Brought Us Home

Luca carefully unrolled the tiny piece of parchment.
The platform was chaotic around us—Marco shouting orders, paramedics checking Tommy's ribs, the police being discreetly managed by Luca’s lawyers. But in our small circle, the world stopped.
Luca read the parchment. His broad shoulders slumped, exhaling a breath he looked like he’d been holding for twenty years.
"What does it say?" I asked gently.
He looked up at me, handing me the paper.
It was a handwritten note from Luca's father, dated the day he died.
To Thomas Reed. My most loyal friend. Isabella betrayed us. She sold our shipping lines to the Volkovs. Protect my son Luca. And when the time comes, tell him he owes his life to the Reeds. The ring in the vault is yours.
"Your father knew," Luca whispered. "My father gave him this before he died. He knew Isabella was a traitor, but he didn't have time to stop her."
I looked at the note. "My dad kept this hidden for all these years. He took Leo to protect him from Isabella and Vanessa."
"He gave up his life," Luca said, looking at me with deep reverence. "He became a mechanic. Raised a family in the suburbs. He took the blame and hid in the shadows just to keep my bloodline safe."
Leo tugged on Luca's sleeve.
"Are we going home now?" the boy asked, rubbing his tired eyes.
Luca looked at the child—his son. Then he looked at Tommy, who was getting his ribs wrapped, and finally at me.
"Yes," Luca said softly. "We're all going home."
By morning, the Chicago sun was breaking through the gray clouds, reflecting off the wet pavement.
The mansion felt different when we returned. The cold, sterile perfection Vanessa had enforced was gone. Marco had already cleared out her things. Isabella was in federal custody, handed over with enough anonymous evidence to put her away for life.
My father arrived at noon.
He walked with a cane, looking older than I remembered, but his eyes were bright.
When Leo saw him, the boy broke away from Luca and ran across the foyer. "Pops!"
My father dropped his cane, catching the boy in his arms and burying his face in Leo's hair. "I got you, kid. You're safe."
Luca stood back, watching the scene with tears in his eyes.
He walked over to my father and extended his hand.
My father looked at the mafia boss, then took his hand.
"Thank you, Thomas," Luca said, his voice breaking. "For everything."
"He's a good boy, Luca," my father said gruffly. "You take care of him now."
"I will," Luca promised. He turned to me. "Emma. I don't expect you to stay. After everything that happened... I understand if you and your family want to leave."
I looked at Luca. I saw the man who had risked his life for a son he didn't know he had. I saw a man who respected my father, who protected my brother.
"I'm not going anywhere," I said, stepping closer to him. "Unless you're firing me."
Luca smiled for the first time in what felt like days. "I think you're promoted. To whatever you want to be."
Leo ran over and grabbed my hand, then grabbed Luca's, pulling us together.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't just the help. I was exactly where I belonged.

But as I helped Leo unpack his small bag in his new bedroom upstairs, a small silver key fell out of his sock drawer.
