Chapter 2 - THE SILVER WATCH IN THE LEATHER BAG

The words hung in the dining room like smoke.
If you tell him now, you’ll get the boy killed too.
I watched Luca’s hands.
They didn’t form fists. They didn’t reach for the weapon I knew he carried under his custom jacket.
Instead, his hands opened. Slowly. Completely.
It was the most terrifying thing I had ever seen him do.
“Who is going to kill my nephew, Vanessa?” Luca asked.
His voice was a whisper.
But in that silent room, it sounded like thunder.
Vanessa backed away. Her heels clicked against the polished marble, a frantic, desperate rhythm. She bumped into the edge of a serving cart, her expensive leather purse sliding off and spilling onto the floor.
“I didn’t mean it like that,” she stammered.
“You meant it exactly like that,” Marissa said, her voice shaking with a mother’s absolute terror. She pulled Danny behind her, shielding the ten-year-old with her own body.
Frank Caruso stood frozen. The elderly man looked at Luca, his face pale and slick with sudden sweat.
“Luca, listen to me,” Frank pleaded. “Michael made me swear. He made me promise on your father’s grave.”
Luca didn’t look at Frank.
His dark eyes were locked on Vanessa.
“Emily,” Luca said.
My heart slammed against my ribs. “Yes, sir?”
“Take Danny upstairs to my study. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me.”
“No!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward. “If she takes him, they’ll know! They’re watching the house!”
Security guards instantly moved, blocking her path.
“Who is watching the house?” Luca demanded, stepping into her space.
Vanessa’s composure completely shattered. The sophisticated fiancée was gone. In her place was a terrified woman named Caroline Hayes, drowning in a past she couldn’t outrun.
“My family, Luca,” Vanessa wept, covering her face. “My brothers. They found out where I was. They found out about the boy.”
Marissa gasped.
I didn’t wait. I reached for Danny’s hand.
“Come on, sweetie,” I whispered.
Danny’s fingers were ice cold. He held onto my hand as if it were a lifeline.
As I led him away from the table, my foot brushed against the contents of Vanessa’s spilled purse. Lipstick. A compact mirror. A wallet.
And a heavy, scratched silver watch.
I stopped.
I knew that watch.
I had polished it three times a week for the last eighteen months. It was kept in a velvet box on Luca’s dresser. It was the watch Michael had been wearing the night he died in the car crash.
Luca had been looking for it just yesterday.
I bent down and picked it up.
The metal felt unnaturally heavy.
“Mr. Moretti,” I said.
Luca turned.
I held up the scratched silver watch.
“This fell out of her bag.”
The entire room stopped breathing.
Luca stared at the watch. The watch he believed had been safely locked in his private bedroom.
Vanessa’s face went completely bloodless.
“I can explain,” she whispered.
Luca crossed the room in two strides. He took the watch from my hand. He didn’t yell. He didn’t threaten her.
He flipped the watch over, his thumb pressing hard against the broken dial.
With a sharp click, the back casing of the watch popped open.
It wasn’t just a timepiece. It was a hollow compartment.
And tucked tightly inside was a small, rusted brass key.
Luca stared at the key. Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Why do you have the key to my brother’s safe house?” Luca asked.
