Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH IN THE SILVER BRACELET

The words hit me like a physical blow.

His biological mother.

I looked at Danny. The ten-year-old boy was staring at his mother, his brown eyes wide with confusion and hurt.

“Mom?” Danny whispered. “What does that mean?”

Marissa couldn’t speak through her tears.

“Luca, I’m bringing them downstairs,” I said firmly into the phone. “We need to talk about this in person.”

“I’m five minutes away,” Luca replied. The line went dead.

I knelt in front of Danny. “Hey, buddy. Everything is going to be okay. We’re going to go downstairs and wait for your uncle, alright?”

Danny didn’t argue. He just held onto my hand with a grip that broke my heart.

We walked down to the main living room. The party guests were long gone. The house was eerily silent, guarded by men in black suits standing at every entrance.

Luca walked through the front door minutes later. His face was a mask of furious, protective grief.

He didn’t go to Marissa. He walked straight to Danny and crouched in front of him.

“You okay, buddy?” Luca asked softly.

Danny nodded, though his lower lip was trembling. “Am I not Mom’s real son?”

Luca reached out and gently squeezed the boy’s shoulders. “Marissa is your mother. Blood doesn’t make a mother, Danny. Love does. And she loves you more than anything in this world.”

Danny buried his face in Luca’s chest, crying quietly.

Luca stood up, keeping one hand on Danny’s back, and turned to Marissa.

“Explain,” Luca demanded. The gentleness was gone.

Marissa wiped her eyes, her hands shaking violently.

“Ten years ago,” Marissa began, her voice hoarse, “Michael was working a job for your father. He raided a warehouse run by the Hayes family. They were ruthless, Luca. They used children to move drugs because cops didn’t search them.”

I felt sick to my stomach.

“Michael found a baby in a crib in the back office,” Marissa wept. “The building was on fire. The Hayes family had abandoned him. Michael couldn’t leave him there to burn. He took the baby.”

“He took Caroline’s baby,” Luca realized.

“We couldn’t go to the police,” Marissa said. “If the Hayes family found out Michael took their heir, they would have started a war that would have burned Chicago to the ground. So your father forged the adoption papers. We raised him as our own. We gave him a safe life.”

“And Vanessa?” Luca asked, his jaw clenching.

“Caroline Hayes changed her name and disappeared after the fire,” Marissa explained. “We thought she was dead. Until she showed up at your charity gala three years ago as Vanessa Bellini.”

“She infiltrated my life to get close to my family,” Luca whispered. “To find her son.”

“She didn’t want to be a mother, Luca,” Marissa warned frantically. “The Hayes brothers are hunting her. If they find Danny, they will use him to blackmail you, or they will kill him to end the Moretti bloodline.”

I looked down at Danny.

He was staring at his wrist.

Slowly, the ten-year-old boy pulled back the cuff of his oversized navy blazer.

He unclasped a small, braided silver bracelet and held it up.

“Aunt Vanessa gave this to me,” Danny whispered.

Marissa gasped, dropping to her knees. “Danny! When?”

“Last month,” Danny said, tears spilling over his cheeks. “She told me it was a secret. She said it was a tracking bracelet, so she could always keep me safe if the bad men came.”

Luca snatched the bracelet from Danny’s hand.

He turned the silver clasp over. A tiny, blinking red light was embedded in the metal.

“It’s a GPS beacon,” Luca growled.

He didn’t throw it. He crushed it under the heel of his shoe, grinding the silver into the marble floor.

“Daniel!” Luca roared for his head of security.

But Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, the heavy oak doors of the living room swung open.

A security guard I didn’t recognize stepped into the room. He was holding a suppressed pistol, aimed directly at Marissa.

“Don’t move, Mr. Moretti,” the guard said calmly. “Or the widow dies.”
