Chapter 7 - THE PHOTOGRAPH IN THE FIRELIGHT

I stared at the photograph in my hands, my mind struggling to process the impossible contradiction.

Vanessa—Caroline Hayes—the woman we thought was a monster trying to steal back her son to secure an empire... had paid the police to raid her own family’s warehouse ten years ago.

“What is this?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

I handed the photograph to Luca.

Luca slowly eased his grip on Frank’s throat, taking the picture. He read the inscription on the back. The anger in his eyes fractured, replaced by profound confusion.

“Vanessa tipped off the police?” Luca murmured.

Frank coughed violently, rubbing his bruised neck.

“She didn’t just tip them off,” Frank wheezed, a bitter, broken smile crossing his face. “She orchestrated the whole thing. She wanted the Hayes family destroyed.”

“Why?” Luca demanded, hauling Frank up by his collar.

“Because her brothers were going to use the baby as a bargaining chip with the Mexican cartels,” Frank confessed, spitting blood onto the marble. “Caroline loved that boy. She knew the only way to save him was to destroy her own family.”

The revelation hit me like a physical weight.

Vanessa wasn’t a villain. She was a mother who had burned her entire life to the ground to save her child.

“Michael didn’t steal Danny,” Luca realized, the truth finally coming into the light.

“No,” Frank laughed weakly. “Caroline called Michael. She begged him to come to the warehouse before the police arrived. She handed the baby to him. She knew the Moretti family was the only one powerful enough to protect him from her brothers.”

“Then why did she come back?” I asked, stepping closer. “Why did she infiltrate the house three years ago if she wanted him safe?”

Frank looked at me, his eyes filled with a pathetic kind of sorrow.

“Because I found her,” Frank said. “I needed leverage against Michael. I tracked Caroline down. I blackmailed her. I told her if she didn’t get close to Luca, if she didn’t help me spy on the family, I would tell her brothers exactly where Danny was.”

I felt physically sick.

The woman I had judged so harshly, the woman who had fired me hours ago... she had done it all to keep Frank’s attention away from Danny. She had moved Danny’s place card at dinner to distance him from the crossfire she knew was coming.

“She fired me,” I whispered, “because she wanted me out of the house before the violence started.”

Luca stared at the photograph. He had spent months believing the woman he asked to marry him was a gold-digging manipulator.

He had been completely wrong.

“Where is Vanessa right now?” Luca asked, his voice suddenly desperate.

“She ran,” Frank coughed. “When the shooting started, she took one of the cars. She’s gone, Luca.”

Luca dropped Frank, turning to the loyal security guards who had just rushed into the foyer.

“Lock him in the basement,” Luca ordered, pointing at Frank. “Then get every available man out on the streets. Find Vanessa. Bring her back here unharmed.”

The guards grabbed Frank, dragging the protesting old man down the hallway.

Luca turned to Danny, who was standing near the bottom of the stairs, clutching his mother’s hand. Marissa had heard everything. She looked entirely shell-shocked.

“Uncle Luca?” Danny asked softly. “Is Aunt Vanessa my real mom?”

Luca walked over and crouched down, placing a gentle hand on Danny’s shoulder.

“She’s the woman who gave you life, buddy,” Luca said honestly. “And she made a huge sacrifice to make sure you were safe with Marissa. But Marissa is the mother who raised you.”

Danny looked at Marissa, then wrapped his arms around her waist. “I love you, Mom.”

Marissa wept, kissing the top of his head.

For a moment, the nightmare felt like it was finally over. The truth was out. The traitor was caught.

But as Luca stood up, the heavy oak front doors suddenly burst open.

A bloodied security guard stumbled into the foyer, collapsing onto the marble floor.

“Boss,” the guard gasped, clutching his stomach.

Luca rushed forward, dropping to his knees. “What happened? Who hit you?”

“It’s Vanessa,” the guard choked out, coughing blood. “She didn’t run away, boss. She went to the guest house.”

“Why would she go to the guest house?” Luca demanded.

The guard looked up, pure terror in his fading eyes.

“Because she didn’t come to this party alone,” the guard whispered. “Her brothers are here. And she just walked right into their trap.”
