Chapter 3 - THE CHILD'S DRAWING IN THE SAFE

The silence in the dining room was suffocating.

Vanessa stared at the rusted key in Luca’s palm.

“Luca, please,” she begged, her voice cracking. “I took it to protect you. If you go to that house, you’ll open a door you can never close.”

“I’ll take that risk,” Luca said, his voice stripped of all emotion.

He looked at me. “Take Danny to the study. Now.”

I didn’t hesitate. I pulled Danny through the grand archway and up the sweeping staircase. Marissa followed right behind us, her breathing shallow and panicked.

We reached Luca’s private study. I pulled them inside and slammed the heavy oak doors, turning the deadbolt until it clicked.

The room smelled of leather and cedar. It felt safe. But the fear in Danny’s eyes told me otherwise.

“Mom?” Danny whispered, his voice trembling. “Why did Aunt Vanessa say people want to kill me?”

Marissa dropped to her knees, pulling her son into a fierce, desperate hug. “Nobody is going to hurt you, baby. I promise. Uncle Luca won’t let them.”

I walked over to the desk, trying to process what had just happened.

Michael Moretti had a safe house. Vanessa had the key. And Frank Caruso knew why Danny was in danger.

Ten minutes later, the heavy handle of the study door turned.

“It’s Luca.”

I unlocked the deadbolt.

Luca stepped inside. The dark jacket was gone. He was wearing a shoulder holster over his white shirt.

“Marissa,” Luca said, his voice entirely focused. “Did you know Michael had a property in South Side?”

Marissa stood up, keeping Danny behind her. She nodded slowly.

“He bought it before we were married,” Marissa whispered. “He told me never to go there. He said it was for emergencies.”

“I’m going there now,” Luca said.

“I’m coming with you,” Marissa insisted.

Luca shook his head. “No. You stay here with Danny. Emily will stay with you.”

He looked at me. It wasn’t a request. It was an order from a man trusting me with the only things in the world he truly loved.

“I won’t let them out of my sight,” I promised.

Luca nodded. He walked out, locking the door behind him.

The next three hours were an agonizing wait. I made Danny hot chocolate from the small kitchenette in the study. I let him play a game on my phone. I tried to act like this was just a normal Tuesday.

At midnight, the phone on Luca’s desk rang.

Marissa jumped. I picked it up.

“Hello?”

“Emily.” It was Luca. He sounded completely out of breath. “Put Marissa on speaker.”

I pressed the button. “She’s listening.”

“Marissa,” Luca said, his voice echoing in the quiet study. “I’m at the safe house. I opened the wall safe.”

“What was inside?” Marissa asked, her voice shaking.

“Nothing of value,” Luca said. “No money. No weapons.”

A heavy pause.

“Just a file. And a child’s drawing.”

Danny looked up from my phone.

“A drawing of what, Luca?” Marissa asked.

“A drawing of a woman,” Luca said softly. “She has blonde hair. And she’s holding a little boy who looks exactly like Danny.”

Marissa went pale.

“Turn the drawing over, Luca,” Marissa whispered, her voice breaking. “What is written on the back?”

I heard the rustle of paper through the speaker.

“It says, Happy Birthday, Mommy. Dated ten years ago.”

Luca exhaled a sharp breath.

“Marissa,” Luca said, the terrifying realization settling into his voice. “Danny drew this for Vanessa. Didn’t he?”

Marissa collapsed into the leather chair, covering her face as she began to sob.

“He didn’t draw it for Vanessa,” Marissa wept. “He drew it for Caroline Hayes. His biological mother.”
