Chapter 12 - The Dawn Of The Empire

Six months later, the Chicago summer sun beat down on the lush, green lawns of the Vale—now officially renamed the Mercer-Vale—Estate.

I stood on the expansive stone patio, wearing a simple, breezy white linen dress. I held a cup of black coffee, watching the scene unfolding in the massive gardens below.

Theo was running across the grass, laughing loudly—a beautiful, constant sound these days. He was chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted a week ago. Running right behind him, looking healthier and happier than I had ever seen her, was Clara.

"He's fast," a deep voice chuckled from behind me.

I turned and smiled as Richard Mercer walked onto the patio, dressed in his usual immaculate, lightweight summer suit.

"He’s happy," I corrected gently, handing Richard a cup of coffee.

"That he is," Richard agreed, leaning against the stone balustrade. "You’ve done a remarkable job with the house, Evelyn. It feels entirely different."

"It feels like a home," I said, looking up at the bright, open windows of the manor.

The last six months had been a whirlwind of legal battles and corporate restructuring. Dominic had tried to fight the bankruptcy and the trust execution, but without money or allies, he was quickly crushed by the legal system. The last I heard, he had accepted a plea deal for the medical fraud regarding Theo’s birth, ensuring he would spend the next five years in a federal facility.

Vanessa Quinn had moved to Los Angeles, her reputation in Chicago permanently destroyed.

I had taken over as the CEO of the newly merged firm. I didn't hide in the shadows anymore. I sat at the head of the boardroom table, wearing the founder's gold ring on my right hand, commanding the empire that my grandfather had helped build.

"I received a call from the Meridian Gala committee this morning," Richard noted casually, sipping his coffee.

I raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Are they asking for donations?"

"They are asking you to be the keynote speaker this winter," Richard smiled, a glint of immense pride in his eyes. "They want the woman who orchestrated the greatest corporate takeover in Chicago history to give the opening address."

I looked out over the lawn. Theo had tackled the puppy and was currently receiving a barrage of wet kisses, his giggles echoing across the estate. Clara looked up at the patio, saw me, and waved a bright, cheerful wave.

I waved back, my heart completely full.

I thought about the woman I was six months ago, standing in a dark closet, terrified of the world, defined by a man who saw me only as a ledger entry.

I looked down at the heavy gold ring on my finger.

"Tell the committee I accept, Richard," I said, the morning breeze catching my hair. "I think it’s time they formally meet Evelyn Vale."
