Chapter 8 - The Signature On Page Four
Vanessa hesitated, her eyes darting suspiciously between me, Dominic, and the thick corporate envelope in my hand.
"What is this?" she demanded, snatching the papers from my grip.
"Just read page four," I replied, folding my arms.
The library was dead silent as Vanessa flipped past the heavy legal jargon of the first three pages. Her manicured finger traced down the fourth page. Her eyes widened, scanning the text rapidly, and then they locked onto the signatures at the bottom.
"The offshore margin agreement..." Vanessa muttered, her voice dropping. She looked up at Dominic, her face a mask of pure horror. "You signed a personal liability clause? Dominic, you told me the Mercer firm was guaranteeing this!"
"They pulled out, Vanessa," Dominic croaked, his voice entirely devoid of its usual arrogant boom.
"What do you mean they pulled out?" Vanessa’s voice rose an octave, edging into hysteria. She looked back at the paper. "This says... this says all your personal assets are forfeit. Your accounts, the penthouse, the cars..."
She dropped the papers onto the desk as if they were covered in acid.
She stared at the man she had been clinging to all night, the man she had proudly flaunted as her billionaire prize. She didn't see a powerful executive anymore. She saw an anchor that was sinking fast, and she was tied to him.
"You're broke," Vanessa whispered, taking a deliberate step away from him.
"Vanessa, wait, I can fix this," Dominic pleaded, reaching out for her hand. "I just need time. I can liquidate some of the smaller holdings, I can—"
"Don't touch me!" she shrieked, recoiling from him.
The complete shift in her demeanor was staggering. The loving, devoted mistress who had mocked me thirty minutes earlier was now looking at Dominic with absolute revulsion.
"I gave up my position at the Chicago PR firm for you!" Vanessa shouted, her face flushed with fury. "I tied my reputation to you! And you're nothing! You're a fraud!"
"Vanessa, please," Dominic begged, his pride entirely shattered in front of us. It was pathetic. He looked small, weak, and terrified.
"Have a nice life in bankruptcy court, Dominic," Vanessa spat.
Without a single glance at me, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the library, the heavy mahogany doors slamming shut behind her.
Dominic stood alone in the center of the room. He had no company, no money, no legacy, and now, not even the woman he had thrown his marriage away for. He slowly sank to his knees on the Persian rug, putting his face in his hands, completely broken.
I looked down at him. I expected to feel triumphant, to feel a surge of vindictive joy. But looking at the shell of the man I had once loved, I felt absolutely nothing. He was just a stranger who had finally met the consequences of his own cruelty.
I turned my back to him and looked at Richard.
"Is it done?" I asked quietly.
Richard smiled warmly, the predatory edge fading from his eyes. He reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a sleek blue folder.
"The corporate takeover is complete. The financial ruin is finalized," Richard said. He knelt down so he was eye-level with Theo, who was still gripping the fabric of my dress.
Richard held the blue folder out to the little boy. "But this is the most important piece of paperwork tonight."
Theo looked at the folder, then up at me with large, questioning eyes.
I knelt beside him, opening the folder. Inside were official court documents bearing the seal of the family court.
"What is it?" I whispered, tears immediately springing to my eyes as I read the bold print at the top of the page.
Decree of Final Adoption.
"I pushed it through the judge’s chambers an hour ago," Richard said softly. "The state recognized the biological father abandoned him. You are officially, legally, his mother, Evelyn. No one can ever take him from you again."
A sob tore out of my throat. I dropped the folder on the floor and pulled Theo into my arms, burying my face in his neck, crying tears of sheer, overwhelming joy.
Theo wrapped his small arms tightly around my neck. And then, for the first time in the three years I had known him, he spoke.
His voice was tiny, raspy from disuse, but clearer than a bell.
"Mom," he whispered against my ear.
My heart shattered and rebuilt itself in a single second. I squeezed him tighter, kissing his cheek repeatedly. "Yes, baby. Yes. I'm your mom. You are safe. We are going home."
I stood up, holding Theo on my hip. He rested his head on my shoulder, looking completely at peace.
I didn't look back at Dominic still sobbing on the floor. I walked toward the door, ready to leave this toxic life behind forever.
"Evelyn, wait," Richard called out.
I turned around.
May you like
Richard was walking toward me. He reached out and dropped a set of heavy, antique iron keys into my free hand.
"You handled him beautifully," Richard smiled. "Now it's time to handle the estate."
