Chapter 5 - The Child’s Blue House
I didn't wait for Richard. I didn't care about the gala, the stares of the elite, or the diamonds sitting heavy in my clutch. I dropped my glass on the nearest table and ran toward the grand staircase.
The midnight silk gathered in my hands as I took the marble steps two at a time. My mind was racing, spiraling into a deep, familiar panic.
Theo wasn't supposed to be in Chicago. He was supposed to be safe in the green mountains of Vermont, far away from the toxic, manipulative reach of Dominic Vale.
Three years ago, I had discovered the financial anomaly in Dominic’s private accounts. A recurring, off-the-books payment to a dilapidated state-run foster home. I had investigated quietly, terrified of what I might find. I found Theo. He was four years old, terrified, and suffering from selective mutism.
He was Dominic's son from a brief affair before we were married. When the mother passed away, Dominic threw the boy into the system, paying just enough to keep his name off the paperwork because a child with developmental delays didn't fit his pristine corporate image.
I couldn't have children. Finding Theo had broken my heart, and then it had healed it. With Richard Mercer’s secret help, I had moved Theo to a world-class facility, paying his tuition out of my own hidden inheritance, visiting him every month while Dominic thought I was at spa retreats.
I reached the top of the staircase, gasping for breath.
The private balcony overlooked the glittering ballroom below, but it was empty.
"Theo?" I called out, my voice cracking. "Theo, sweetheart, are you here?"
A heavy mahogany door to the left, leading to the venue’s private VIP library, stood slightly ajar.
I pushed it open.
The library was dark, lit only by the ambient glow of the city streetlights streaming through the tall windows. Standing in the center of the Persian rug, wearing a tiny, slightly oversized tuxedo, was Theo.
He looked so small surrounded by the towering shelves of leather-bound books. His dark hair, exactly the same shade as Dominic's, was neatly combed. He was clutching a small stuffed bear to his chest.
"Theo!" I breathed, dropping to my knees right there on the expensive rug.
He didn't speak—he rarely did—but his face lit up with a pure, unadulterated relief. He ran across the room and threw his small arms around my neck, burying his face in my shoulder.
I held him fiercely, breathing in the scent of his baby shampoo, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes.
"It's okay, baby. I've got you. I'm right here," I whispered, rocking him gently. "How did you get here? Who brought you?"
I pulled back to look at his face. He reached into the small pocket of his tuxedo jacket.
He pulled out a heavy, ivory envelope sealed with a thick red wax stamp. It wasn't just any stamp. It was the official corporate seal of Vale Holdings—Dominic’s company.
But the wax seal was already broken.
I frowned, taking the envelope from his small fingers. "Who gave this to you, Theo?"
Theo pointed toward the dark corner of the library.
A figure stepped out of the shadows. It was Richard’s head of security, a massive man named Vance.
"I brought him, Ms. Vale," Vance said, his voice a low rumble. "Mr. Mercer ordered it. We intercepted a private investigator Dominic hired three days ago. Dominic found the payments to the Vermont school. He was going to have the boy moved to a state ward tomorrow morning to cut you off completely."
My blood ran cold.
Dominic didn't just want me out of the penthouse. He had discovered my one vulnerability, my only source of true happiness, and he was planning to destroy it just to punish me. He was going to throw his own son back into the system just to watch me suffer.
"Take him to the car," I told Vance, my voice shaking with a rage so profound it scared me. "Take him right now. Do not let anyone see him."
"It's too late for that, Evelyn."
The voice came from the library doorway.
I spun around, instinctively pushing Theo behind my back.
Dominic stood in the doorway, the light from the hallway illuminating the sheer malice on his face. He stepped into the room and closed the heavy mahogany door behind him, locking us inside.

He looked at me, then his eyes drifted down to the terrified little boy hiding behind my silk skirt.
"So," Dominic sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "This is where you've been hiding my garbage."
