Chapter 6 - ELENA’S OWN DOOR

Six months passed.

Elena’s life became boring.

She loved it.

Wake 5:45.

Train.

Hotel.

Staff schedules.

Missing pillowcases.

Guests demanding impossible late checkout.

Teo complaining about chemistry.

Rent.

Groceries.

Sunday laundry.

No dead uncles.

No secret Mafia marriage agreements.

Beautiful.

Then Matteo Santoro walked into hotel lobby at 6:20 on Tuesday.

Elena saw him from mezzanine.

Dark coat.

One security man stayed near entrance.

He did not ask manager to summon her.

Good.

He waited.

She finished shift handoff first.

Then went downstairs.

“What happened?”

His eyebrows lifted.

“Hello.”

“If you appear at my workplace, something happened.”

“Fair.”

He held small envelope.

“Your mother.”

Elena’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Dominic’s attorneys turned over property.”

“One letter was addressed to Sofia Torres.”

“Unopened?”

“Yes.”

“How did Dominic get it?”

“From Box 27.”

Copies.

Maybe Lucia had included one? Fine.

Actually he stole box and found Lucia-to-Sofia letter copy? Hmm. Let's say among materials recovered from his safehouse was an envelope Lucia had prepared for Sofia but never delivered, likely taken years ago from archive. Better.

Matteo gave it.

Did not stay while she read.

“Do you want privacy?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I’ll be downstairs.”

No pressure.

Letter:

Sofia, if I fail to end this cleanly, I am sorry I involved you. You taught me something my family never did: keeping a secret for someone is not the same as belonging to them.

Elena cried.

If your children ever cross paths with mine, please let them know they owe each other nothing. Debt is how families like ours turn kindness into chains.

That line.

Elena sat long time.

Then final:

I hope my son becomes the kind of man who can hear no from somebody he cannot punish.

Elena laughed through tears.

Lucia knew.

She went downstairs.

Matteo waited with terrible lobby coffee.

He stood.

“What did she say?”

Elena folded letter.

“She had opinions.”

“That sounds like her.”

Then:

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

He did not ask dinner.

Good.

Instead:

“How’s your brother?”

“Annoying.”

“Healthy?”

“Yes.”

“School?”

“Passing.”

“Good.”

Then he left.

That bothered Elena more than if he stayed.

Because she had spent six months expecting his interest to be temporary aftermath.

But he respected boundary enough not to force continuation.

Two months later they met again by accident? Could be at Queens community fundraiser? Better perhaps Lucia/Sofia memorial? Matteo created no grand plaque. He asks permission to send flowers to Sofia grave? Hmm.

Maybe Teo gets internship application at Santoro legitimate shipping? No, avoid entanglement.

Elena herself receives invitation from Caroline.

Coffee.

Caroline had entered therapy and begun work in independent fashion business? She grew from alliance.

Elena agreed.

Caroline looked different without engagement world.

More relaxed.

“I’m moving to Boston.”

“Why?”

“Job.”

“My own.”

Good.

Then she handed Elena red theater ticket.

Original mostly torn? Police returned preserved piece? She had found missing full ticket in one burned photo box recovered from fireplace? Let's say investigators found second matching ticket among Victor’s papers, Caroline gives copy. Fine.

“Why give me?”

“Because if you hadn’t picked up glass…”

Elena interrupted.

“No destiny speech.”

Caroline laughed.

“Fine.”

“Because you got slapped for something that belonged to my family mess.”

“Keep it as evidence I have terrible judgment.”

Elena smiled.

“Accepted.”

Then Caroline said:

“Matteo asks about you.”

Elena sighed.

“Do not become matchmaker.”

“I’m leaving state.”

“I deserve entertainment.”

“No.”

Caroline laughed.

Then serious:

“He’s different.”

“Because uncle arrested?”

“No.”

“Because people started saying no.”

That interested Elena.

Matteo’s organization was changing.

Old criminal routes shut.

Legitimate shipping board independent.

Nico still security but no midnight collections.

Some men left.

Some rivals took territory.

Matteo accepted loss rather than rebuild violence.

Not saint.

Still history.

Still feared.

But direction.

Then one evening, he called.

He had never called personal number before.

“Elena.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

Suspicious.

Then:

“Would you have dinner with me?”

She went quiet.

“No.”

Pause.

“Okay.”

She almost smiled.

“Why no?”

He corrected himself immediately.

“You don’t owe reason.”

There.

Lucia’s wish.

Hear no from someone he cannot punish.

Elena softened.

“Because I’m not sure if you want me or what I represent.”

He was quiet.

“That’s fair.”

“Ask me later.”

“That is dangerous wording.”

“Goodnight, Mr. Santoro.”

“Matteo.”

“Goodnight.”

Three months passed.

He did not ask.

Then Elena called him.

“Coffee.”

He paused.

“Is that question?”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

Public.

Queens.

No security inside.

He arrived early.

They talked about mothers.

Not crime first.

Lucia.

Sofia.

Teo.

Matteo’s childhood.

He admitted he hated piano.

Elena laughed.

Then:

“Why did you agree to marry Caroline originally?”

He thought.

“Because it made sense.”

“That’s depressing.”

“Yes.”

“Did you love her?”

“I cared for her.”

“She cared for me.”

“But we both mistook familiarity and family approval for inevitability.”

Elena nodded.

“Good thing I found photograph.”

He looked at her.

“Maybe.”

She narrowed eyes.

“No destiny.”

He smiled.

“No destiny.”

Then:

“Just evidence.”

Perfect.

They dated slowly.

Elena kept job.

Matteo never offered to move her back estate.

Good.

Teo disliked him immediately.

Excellent.

At first meeting:

“You’re Mafia Boss.”

Matteo looked at Elena.

She shrugged.

“He has internet.”

Matteo said:

“That label isn’t entirely inaccurate.”

Teo stared.

“You hurt people?”

Silence.

Matteo answered carefully.

“I have been part of things I am not proud of.”

“Are you now?”

“Trying not to be.”

Teo looked at sister.

“This is terrible boyfriend.”

Elena laughed so hard she cried.

Matteo actually smiled.

“I like him.”

May you like

“Don’t.”

Family.
