Chapter 8 - THE WEDDING THAT ENDED AN OLD AGREEMENT

Matteo and Elena married eighteen months later.

Not at Santoro estate.

Not Bellucci club.

Not Verona Theatre.

Brooklyn botanical conservatory? Could be nice, but user asked mafia story. Small church + courtyard maybe.

They chose small historic church where Lucia once volunteered.

Public enough.

Ordinary enough.

Caroline attended.

That mattered.

She wore blue.

No champagne dress.

Victor came too.

Older.

Humiliated by history but no longer hiding.

Nico stood with Matteo.

Teo walked Elena halfway then she walked rest herself? Nice.

Before ceremony, Teo whispered:

“If he annoys you, I have car.”

Elena laughed.

“You don’t own car.”

“I know guy.”

“Terrible.”

Then ceremony.

No underworld alliance.

No captains required.

Some old Santoro men not invited.

Important.

Matteo’s vows:

No possession.

No “I’ll protect you from world.”

Instead:

“I promise not to turn care into control.”

Powerful.

Elena:

“I promise to tell you when you are being impossible.”

Audience laughed.

Matteo:

“She already does.”

Caroline cried.

Perhaps because her own avoided marriage made this possible.

At reception, no head table.

Round tables.

No hierarchy.

Victor asked Elena for dance? Maybe too soon. Better he thanks.

Caroline approached.

“Do you realize this is first Santoro-Bellucci-adjacent wedding in twenty-six years that nobody negotiated?”

Elena laughed.

“And you aren’t marrying him.”

“Best part.”

They hugged.

Not because slap forgotten.

Because Caroline had spent two years making amends.

She paid damages? No.

She apologized privately and publicly? Could have. Maybe during deposition she admitted assault; not needed.

Elena chose forgiveness gradually.

Then Dominic sentencing occurred weeks later.

He was convicted/pled on multiple counts and received long sentence likely remaining life given age.

No dramatic curse.

He looked at Matteo once.

“You threw away family.”

Matteo answered:

“No.”

“I stopped letting dead men schedule it.”

Great.

After wedding, Elena did not become lady of estate.

She kept hotel job another year.

Then pursued own path.

She had discovered love for household operations but not servitude.

She enrolled hospitality management certification and eventually became operations director for boutique hotel group.

Independent.

Matteo admired.

No rescue.

Teo went to state university studying architecture maybe.

His tuition: scholarships + Elena + normal loans; Matteo offered, refused. Later birthday gifts reasonable.

Matteo’s legitimate businesses stabilized.

Less profitable initially.

Cleaner.

Older media still called him feared Mafia Boss.

He did not pretend history erased.

He cooperated where necessary, divested old operations, and reduced violence.

Some people never trusted him.

Fair.

Then one day reporter asked Elena publicly:

“Did you change Matteo Santoro?”

She laughed.

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“He found out people had been making decisions for him before he was old enough to understand them.”

“And?”

“He decided to make his own.”

Good.

Then:

“What role did you play?”

“I found a photograph.”

Perfect.

That became headline.

She hated it.

Matteo framed clipping.

May you like

She threw pillow at him.

Marriage.
